Information about boot process needed!

I'm trying to figure out a boot problem.

Questions:
1. In the boot process, what happens directly after the disks are
scanned?
2. Why would the boot process sometimes scan all disks but usually only
scan the basic disks (skipping the dynamic disks)?
3. Why would booting to safe mode, after a failed boot (see bottom),
then allow for a normal boot?

Further information:
-/bootlog and /sos are enabled in the boot.ini

The first screen with the initial load is shown (ntoskrnl.exe to
agpCPQ.sys).
Next is the screen with the XP build, number of processors (2), amount
of memory (2048) and that boot logging is enabled.
Next comes information about the disks that are scanned and that they
are clean. (What's weird here is that usually only the basic disk are
shown, occasionally it shows the other 3 dynamic disks as well. Why
would this vary?!?)

Occasionally the boot process stops at this point. Booting to safe mode
allows access. Nbtlog contains no information regarding the failed boot
(only the safe mode boot). Restarting the machine allows for a normal
boot to occur.

I'm really appreciative of any help!!!
