Inexistent file returned in search

Hello, I have moved some files from one folder to another, and even if the
Indexing Options dialog says 'Indexing Complete', they are returned when I
do a search.

Doesn't the index remove files that are no longer in the system?

Pablo.

Are you sure you haven't moved the files into a folder which is being
indexed? When I move or add files the index is updated within seconds.

I've moved the files, then renamed them, and albeit they no longer exist
by that name, they still appear when I search for them. I try to rename
them and Explorer says he can't find them, I try to open their location
('Open file location' on the context menu), and explorer tells me that the
location is not available (and rightly so, the folder where they lived no
longer exists).

I know it probably will get fixed by an index rebuild, but I want to know
why that happened, if there's a known workaround, or if its a 'feature' of
the index the non removal of inexistent files.

I experience the same thing. Apparently, I have to rebuild index to sort it
out.

Hello,

It's a bug, and we need more information to fix it. If it happens fairly
consistently, could you please do the following:

- Open Indexing Options, wait until the indexer is idle.
- Run the following command:
logman start "test1" -p "Microsoft-Windows-Search-Core" -o
"test1.etl" -ets
- Move a file from an indexed location to a non-indexed location.
- Wait until the indexer is idle again.
- Run the following command: logman stop "test1" -ets
- Verify that the file still stuck in the index. If it didn't - try again.
- Zip and email me the test1.etl file ([email protected]).

The ETL file will contain the sequence of events inside the indexer. I'm
hoping to get a better idea of what's going on out of it. Note - it will
contain the name of the file you moved.
