indexing problems in outlook 2007 on vista?

I had a trial version of office 2007 enterprise running on vista. I ended up
uninstalling and re-installing a version I recently bought. I can't perform
any search in my contacts - I get a message saying that there are indexing
problems. I followed the steps to check search settings then went on to
rebuild the index in control panel/system maintenance - rebooted - and still
the problem is there. any advice?

Nothing to go on. How did you migrate your Outlook data? How did you ensure
your Outlook data file is still being indexed? What is the exact error
message and what application is throwing it?

Russ, thanks for the reply. I am a new user of Outlook's. I downloaded the
trial version first and imported all my data from my Palm Desktop through a
simple import of a csv file with manual field mapping. it worked. I was
having minor indexing issues at that point.
Then I backed up the .pst file, uninstalled the trial version, installed my
newly purchased CD. I was surprised upon first launch to see my old data
still there. SO I didn't need to restore my back-up .pst file.

Now, my instant search does not work at all doesn't matter if I am in mail,
contacts or calendar (which is a huge pain). I get the following messages in
outlook:

1. No matches found for "my search criteria"
2. Search results may be incomplete because items are still being indexed.
3. when I click, I get the following message box:
"Outlook is currently indexing your items.

Search results may be incoplete becasue items are still being indexed.

1262 items remaingin in "Personal Folders'.
1262 items remaining across all open mailboxes.
"

As I mentioned earlier, I did try to re-create the index using System &
Maintenance - indexing options. but the issue persists.

thanks.

That is a terrible way to create an Outlook data file. It is not likely a
valid file. Have you checked it for errors?
The message tells you the story. Have you given Outlook time to complete its
indexing? Is this data file included in the Search locations?

I omitted to mention something. I imported only a small portion of my data
using the csv file. the rest, I imported via synchronization with my Palm
Treo who contained about 7,000 contacts. (sorry for forgetting to mention
that).

my search locations include the two files: "Personal Folders" and "archive
folders". I'm assuming that is all I need - or is it?

Should be. I'd still check your file for errors and leave Outlook running
overnight to see if it will complete the indexing.

considering the large number of contacts, would you recommend any utility
that will help do an error check? what am I looking for error-wise?

is there an easy way to re-create the index?

thanks again. really appreciate the time and followup!

Samir.

The only utility is the one Outlook provides: the Inbox Repair Tool.
