Incorrect spaing within abbreviations - a. M.

In Word, when I type an abbreviation such as "a.m." it is automatically
corrected to "a. M."

Similarly, numbers have an additional space inserted - "9.87" become "9.
87" automatically.

Any help would be greatly appreciated - I am wasting a large amount of time
fixing these errors.

I am using Word 2007, Windows XP, and a Microsoft Natural Wireless keyboard
(7000).

The first thing to check is if the correct language is applied to text.
