incomptability of extern harddiskdriver

My new PC with Vista Home Premium doesn't react to my 1-year old extern
harddisk (Medion), neither to firewire nor to USB connection.
According to the PCstore(Dell) this might be a matter of incomptability.
Does anyone know of a solution for this problem?

Install Linux - I have no difficulties with USB and firewire devices.

This may not help but here was my little problem: I connected a number of
external USB drives without problems except for one: the problem was it was
password protected, as set in the BIOS of another machine. Once I put it
back on that machine and removed the password Vista accepted it and showed
it as a new drive letter.
