Inaccessable Boot Device

D

Doc

Greetings,

I just bought and installed a new motherboard in my
tower. I went from an ASUS A7A266 to an ASUS A7N8X
Deluxe. I also switched processors from an AMD 1200 to an
AMD 2500+, as well as changing my memory from Crucial
256MB DDR ECC to Kingston 512 DDR Non-ECC. When I boot up
the machine with the new hardware, I can enter the BIOS,
change settings, and all of the IDE divices are listed.
However, when Windows 2000 Profiessional tries to load, I
get an error that states there is an "Inaccessable Boot
Device." Does anyone know what is causing this? I have
the old motherboard in right now and everything is fine.
The hard drive wit hthe Windows 2000 Professional just
doesn't seem to want to take the new motherboard. Any
ideas? Thanks in advance.

Try putting back the old system and boot up. Go to the
Device Manager ->
IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers ->
Primary IDE Channel properties ->
Advanced Settings ->
there, change the Transfer Mode to "PIO Only"
Go thru a proper shutdown and put back the new system in place and boot.
Follow the above procedure (if it passes thru the previous Blue-screen
point), change the "PIO Only" back to "DMA if Available". and reboot.
All the best wishes

If I was changing MB,s, I wouldn't even screw around. Back up your data,
reformat and reinstall.

This is asked and answered nearly every day. Please search for "Moving
Windows 2000 to new hardware". Bruce Chambers has posted multiple times
addressing this issue.

I saw that, but this isn't totally new hardware, it is
moving an existing hard drive to a new motherboard. I've
already read the artice you mentioned, and it does not
help.

Doc - moving to a new mobo is effectively "totally new hardware." All
problems apply. Best you resort to a clean install, sad to say.
