In MS Word what is normal.doc that keeps popping up and asking me.

When I work in word, when I go to close the program, I get a box that says
changes have been made to normal.doc and asks if I want to save them. What
is this? It has no affect on the document I created from what I can tell.

You will also get the prompt if you have made changes within Word that may
be required to be kept in normal.dot, and if Word has crashed and not
cleared its temporary files. Start Word then immediately close it. Do you
get the prompt? Answer No then follow the clean up routine at
http://www.gmayor.com/what_to_do_when_word_crashes.htm . Restart Word and
close it. This time answer Yes to the prompt. Next time you close Word it
should only prompt if you have made changes that affect the underlying
template.

My shorthand rule: Unless you specifically made changes to your template
(nmormal.dot) the answer to these questions is always "no." You can also
get errors if you somehow get Word running twice--it's very easy. Nothing
prevents it and your may not even realize what is happening but it usually
creates problems. Word wanting to same changes it made to your tmeplate is
a sure clue something bad has been happening.
