Importing MPEG-2 files to Movie Maker

I have read all the posts on this forum... Tomorrow, I will follow PJ's
advice and find the utility that converts MPEG-2 files to AVI so that I can
use Movie Maker 2 to edit them.

I have two questions...

1. Sony must be close to market leaders in the Digital camcorder market.
At any rate, they sell a lot of them... And the latest Sony handycams create
files in the MPEG-2 format. So, with all this potential demand, why on earth
hasn't Microsoft updated Movie Maker to be able to import MPEG-2 files? I
don't even mind paying a reasonable fee for this feature.

2. If I use a utility program to convert MPEG-2 to AVI and then import into
MM2, will I lose quality? If so, will it be visible?

I would appreciate thoughts and comments. Papa John, surely you carry some
clout with MS, when willl they see the light?

Some Sony handicams use MPEG-2 format to make discs, but others use the
Digital Video format to make tapes... the choice people make depends on
their primary interest. Mini-DV camcorders are the best choice if one wants
to do editing.

Beyond disc-based camcorders, the MPEG-2 format is common.... and Microsoft
is well aware of how common it is. Until then, the conversion process is the
way to go and pretty easy to do.
