Importing Forte Agent messages and attachments to Outlook Express

G

Gord McFee

I am new to XP and am looking for a way to import Forte Agent messages
and attachments into Outlook Express. I can import the messages by
saving all the Forte folders as Unix files, importing them into Eudora
3.06 and then importing from there into Outlook Express. But the
attachments are all lost - pictures show up as gibberish.

Does anyone know of a way to import the messages *and* the
attachments?

Thanks.

Gord, do the attachments show up properly in Eudora before the final import?
If so, a later version of Eudora might "upgrade" the imported mail files to
a form that lets the attachments survive.

Also, utilities like Aid4Mail and ABC Amber might help.

Hi Pat.

No, they don't.

a form that lets the attachments survive.

The problem is that OE only allows imports from Eudora through Version
3, so a later version wouldn't help.

I saw them, but, cheapskate that I am, was hoping to be able to do it
for free. I don't really want to buy a program without knowing for
sure that it will work.

That helps localize the problem - it is happening at the inital import.

Can you import to a later version of Eudora? If that fixes the
attachments, you are nearly there.

Actually, it might, because you could then import to Thunderbird or Netscape
Communicator and finally take that into OE. It's not unknown to have to
complete an import by using three or four mail programs.

You can find older versions of Netscape here:
http://browser.netscape.com/downloads/archive/

But first, of couse, you need to get the attachments cleanly out of Agent
first.

Both ABC and Aid4Mail have free demo/trial modes. Both apply limitations in
these modes, including banners and ads and numbers of messages. But you
can find out if they will work or not.

Note what I am posting with. :)

You got me thinking when you mentioned Thunderbird. I vaguely
remembered some way of doing it from Thunderbird, so I installed it and
imported
all the files from Forte to Thunderbird. All of the attachments came
through. Then I needed some way to convert the Thunderbird files to OE
and, using Google as my friend, found a neat little program called
IMAPSize. The links are:

http://www.broobles.com/imapsize/th2outlook.php

and

http://www.broobles.com/imapsize/index.php

It worked like a charm.

Thanks for energizing my increasingly feeble brain cells, Pat.

Why ask HERE? Agent and OE are NOT XP, but separate programs and each
with their own USENET groups. Ask in those; your question is out of
place HERE.

Before I posted, I checked this newsgroup, and there have been several
OE threads and the posters were not told they were off-topic. If I had
not upgraded to XP, I would not be using OE and wouldn't have the
problem. That's why I thought it was appropriate to ask, especially
since this is a "general" group.

NoConsequence's reply is rude and inconsiderate. He certainly doesn't
speak for all of us here.

Nevertheless, despite the rude way he put his reply, he is largely
right. Agent questions are certainly off-topic here, and OE questions
are at least marginally off-topic.

But more important than whether OE questions are off-topic here or not
is the point that the OE experts tend to hang out in the OE
newsgroups, and therefore you are far more likely to get the help you
need there than here.

Thanks for this, Ken. Noted and I have subscribed to the newsgroup.
