Importing Excel into Contacts

An employee left another organization, exported her Outlook contacts into excel and is now in my organization and wants to import the excel file into her contacts.
When trying to import the excel file into Outlook contacts I receive an error:
An error has occurred in the Microsoft excel translator while getting the contents of a file system.
The file was not recognized. The excel translator was unable to recognize this file. It could be the wrong file, a version of the file type which is not supported by this translator, or the file might be corrupt.

Can anyone help?

Suggest you try opening the file with the Excel version you have. Try all
the Excel formats listed if it doesn't work the first time. If you're
successful, save the data in CSV format and import that file into Outlook.
If you can't open it in Excel - the file may be corrupt.

A quick way to check on things would be to try and open up the file in
Excel - if it doesn't work for the Excel format you selected - select
another format that's listed (options will depend on the Excel version
you're using and what translators you have installed).

If you can't open it in Excel - chances are the file is corrupt (or you
don't have a translator for the version it was saved in).

If you can open it in Excel - just save it as a .CSV file and import that
file.
