Import Identities

A

asussertown

This is a repeat of a previous post that I never saw online.

I'm an OE immigrant.
I've been trying some things with the address book/contacts, but I don't get
it.
In OE I had 3 identities so I wouldn't get my contacts mixed up with each
other. How should I handel this in Outlook and how should I import?
The import menu only imported email and not the address book. I copied over
one of the identities, then had to rebuild the groups. The other two
identities are waiting for a decision. Thank you.

Please read replies to your posts instead of making us answer a second time.

Please clarify what it is you need to do.
Outlook does not use identities. It does not use groups.
Why did you need separate identities?

A

asussertown

If I sent post twice, it was by mistake. Also, I believe I kept downloading
the headers and could never find the post, so I reposted. I mentioned this
at the bottom of the post to which you just replied.
I am trying to think through the process. I had an identity of personal
email addresses. Then I had another for buisness. When I needed to send an
email to all my business contacts, I simply selected that identity. Keeping
all my addresses separate made it quicker to browse the addresses in each
identity for any specific purposes. Some of my personal addresses were added
to the business set, and some were not. It was a good organizational
procedure.
I'd like to understand how to plan this out before dumping my business
addresses into my contacts list. It seems like another issue would be that I
would have to delete duplicates which I displayed differently in each
identity and also I may have to slowly determine which distribution list
each address should go into. In order to keep the comments relatively
simple, I did not mention above that I actually had 3 identities and some of
the addresses of each overlapped. What would your suggestion be?

I just read another post that said Outlook does not use an address book. Now
that's confusing for me just now. The address book is in the tool bar among
other places.

You have two options in Outlook. Create multiple Contacts subfolders and
enable each as an email address book in its properties. Or make use of
Outlook's Category feature. Read about the pros and cons of each option

Now, do you have to be in corporate mode in order to be able to resolve
addresses?
I note that when I type a name sometimes it finally resolves just when I hit
the addresbook button, but not before.

Post your Outlook version. Outlook hasn't used two modes for years, but
autoresolution worked the same in both modes. I'm not sure what you're

I thought OE would resolve or autocomplete while typing the name.
I open a blank email. I type some of a name. No autocomplete takes place.
Sometimes when I select the address book. It autocompletes at that point.
Other times it does not in the email. Although I note that if I select Send,
I get options to select the names with similar spelling.

Yes, it appeard in the address book. It appeared in my contacts book (I
don't find a pab), it appears as a yellow folder under my contacts icon.
Then I see no way, yet to import my business contacts addressess into this

I was confused by the reading regarding backing up files. Selecting the
properties for my Personal Folders, it pointed to the outlwvw.dll file. Does
this mean I should back up that dll in order to save my settings as well as

I am trying to think through the process. I had an identity of personal
email addresses. Then I had another for buisness. When I needed to
send
an
email to all my business contacts, I simply selected that identity. Keeping
all my addresses separate made it quicker to browse the addresses in each
identity for any specific purposes. Some of my personal addresses were added
to the business set, and some were not. It was a good organizational
procedure.
I'd like to understand how to plan this out before dumping my business
addresses into my contacts list. It seems like another issue would be
that
I
would have to delete duplicates which I displayed differently in each
identity and also I may have to slowly determine which distribution list
each address should go into. In order to keep the comments relatively
simple, I did not mention above that I actually had 3 identities and
some
of
the addresses of each overlapped. What would your suggestion be?

Outlook does not use identities. It does not use groups.
Why did you need separate identities?

The import menu only imported email and not the address book. I copied
over
one of the identities, then had to rebuild the groups. The other two
identities are waiting for a decision. Thank you.

I was confused by the reading regarding backing up files. Selecting the
properties for my Personal Folders, it pointed to the outlwvw.dll file. Does
this mean I should back up that dll in order to save my settings as well as
the pst file? Then I would have everything I need?

Now, do you have to be in corporate mode in order to be able to resolve
addresses?
I note that when I type a name sometimes it finally resolves just when I hit
the addresbook button, but not before.

No. All your data is contained in the PST file.
Where in the world do you see a dll referenced in the properties of a
Personal Folders file? This is either the most corrupt profile I've ever
seen, or you're looking somewhere else.

You are confusing autoresolution with autocompletion. Outlook 2000 only does
the former.

I may be using it improperly. It evidently doesn't work the way it did in
OE. I remember using it in Outlook a few years ago, may it wasn't in the
message itself, but in the address book

Post your Outlook version. Outlook hasn't used two modes for years, but
autoresolution worked the same in both modes. I'm not sure what you're
asking.
