Images are saved as bitmaps.

Hello,

I hope someone is able to help me. I cannot save any images as .jpg or .gif
in Internet Explorer, it only gives me the option to save as .bmp. I'm using
Windows XP Pro, Service Pack 2 installed. Everything ran perfect until
yesterday. I have tried the solutions I found in the Knowledge Base, cleaned
out my cache, Temporary internet files. But it still stays the same.

Does anyone have a solution to this. Thanks for your help!

Hi Carine :)

Try the following and see if it helps:

Why is Bitmap my only option to save a picture?

Courtesy of Kaylene aka Taurarian:

To empty your Temporary Internet Files cache
1. In Internet Explorer, click Tools, and then click Internet Options.
2. On the General tab, click Delete Files

To turn off graphic compression in the AOL client
1. Go to Preferences in AOL.
2. Click Internet properties (or WWW in some versions).
3. Click Web Graphics.
4. Clear Never compress graphics (or Use compressed graphics in some
versions).

and.........

Why IE will only let you save as BMP

Hi Jan Il,

Thanks for your kind help. Alas, I have been there, done that, and nothing
seems to work. I just don't get it. :-( I thought it would help if I cleaned
the cache and .tmp files, and it doesn't seem to be an ActiveX or Java object
that is damaged. I have seen many things with Internet Explorer, but this is
a mystery to me! Everything is working perfect, yet I cannot save my files
with the proper extension. Anything else you can think of? :-( I have worked
at solving this problem for hours without end now. But still nothing. I hope
you can come up with something, because I have ran out of ideas. Thanks
again! ;-)

Can you give us a bit more detail about what happens when you try to save
the images...such as:

1. Do you get any error messages? If so, what to they say?
2. Do you have any ad or popup blockers activated? If so, which ones?
3. Do you have programs such as Zone Alarm or Yahoo Companion?
4. Have you run the recommended scumware detection and removal tools to make
sure there is nothing on your system that can cause the problem? If so,
which ones, and did it/they find anything?
5. What have you done to problem solve, other than the information I
provided? Just so we don't continue to offer steps you have already done,
and it will give us a better view of the current situation. :)

Hi Carine :)

Here's a couple of other suggestion that might work for you. Try them
instead of just clearing the cache.

Courtesy of Ramesh -

Delete the index.dat completely

http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/delcache.htm
http://windowsxp.mvps.org/mrublaster.htm

Click Start/Run and type this command to fix the 'Content Type' settings:

regsvr32 /i mshtml.dll
(and/or)
regsvr32 /i shimgvw.dll (for WinXP)

or......

Do a Deltree command in DOS:
http://inetexplorer.mvps.org/answers_8.htm#deltree
http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/delcache.htm

Follow the instructions to the letter. You will be left with new Index.dat
file of 32 KB, and a newly created History folder. The same will apply if
you go the distance and do a Deltree on TIF and Cookie folders. It is
unnecessary to do that if they are in good working order.

If these steps do not resolve your problem, please post back to this thread
with the details and any error messages.

Hope this helps

Hi Jan Il, ;-)

Thank you so very much for your help. I thought there must be a different
solution. I had downloaded Mozilla Firefox browser and Mozilla Thunderbird
email program and had no problems with that, so it couldn't have been XP Pro
that was acting up.

Today EUREKA! I found it. Outlook Express asked me to compact folders, and I
always skip that step. Now I didn't. It took quite a while. I rebooted my
computer and I can again save images with the right extention in Internet
Explorer!

Thank you very much for your help. You have been most kind to offer a
plethora of solutions. I very much appreciate that! :)

Now I can get back to work! ;-)

All the best and thanks again!
