images are now system icons??

I was saving jpg images from my harddrive to a CD. My images on the hard
drive and CD are now system icons and when I click them it says 'no preview'.
Can I restore these images? They appear to be corrupt. I've tried opening
them in different programs; and I tried a system restore.

or

Are there copies somewhere in the hardrive? ie When I was burning them it
said there wasn't enough space on the disc (even though there was). So I
deleted the 'images waiting to be copied'. (fyi the images on the hard drive
where still intact at that point). So are there copies in the computer
somewhere?
