Hi yall!

I'm looking for a free utility that will show me at a quick glance which
folders are taking up most of the room on my hard drive.

I have a 146gb hard drive almost full and I can't tell for the life of me
what is taking up so much space.

Can anyone recommend something that works for both Vista and XP?

Please advise

Wow! Thanks for the blast from the past! XtreeGold was one of my fav DOS
utilities. I often wondered what happened to those old utilities...

BUT HOWEVER THE THING IS that won't work for me. I need something that scans
the entire hard drive and shows me at a glance which folders are taking up
the most space. As I said, I have 146gb on a drive and most of it is full
but I can't tell where the space is being taken.

Anyone else have any suggestions?

I like the display concept of this one. It represents files in a
graphical way, and it is surprisingly easy to visualize your drive
this way.

Not a sorted list and probably Vista only:

Windows Explorer, 'open' the drive so the list of folders is in the
right-hand pane and then 'hover' with your 'mouse' over the name or icon
of a folder. A popup will appear, which - amongst others - shows the
total size of the files in/below that folder. Magic, isn't it! :)

It works for XP, with a few exceptions you can easily deal with.
For instance, Documents And Settings is said on my machine
to have more than 1.17 Gby, and within it the [myname] folder
has more than 2.24 Gby using this hovering technique (give it a
little time for really big folders), not surprising considering that
my My Documents has 8.92 Gby. Use a little patience and
common sense, ignore the "more than"s, and you can see quite
a lot of useful information with no more than mouse movement.
And it is sorted if you use View/Arrange Icons by/Name.
Sorted alphabetically, that is.

Start, Search, For Files or Folders, Search all Folders, do a search under
"What size is it?" and specify a size until you find the large files or
folders that are taking up so much space. Don't have to download or pay for
it; it's already included in Windows.

WinDirStat or SequoiaView.

The first is at http://windirstat.sourceforge.net/

They do a very nice graphical display of files as rectangles whose area is
proportional to their size. Easy to spot big files.

I'm not sure about SequoiaView in Vista 64, but I'm using WinDirStat here
with no problems.

I thought I had a shortcut to SequoiaView, but I can't find it, so I
suggest Googling.

Folks:

I just wanted everyone to know that I used SequoiaView and it solved my
problem in a big way.

I found that someone was using another folder besides the standard ITunes
folder and someone had installed 90gb of music in on the computer and no one
knew it was there because ITunes was not showing those files in the LIB.

SequoiaView showed me the largest folder at a glance and I was able to move
the ITunes Music over to the correct folder and import all the new songs
into ITunes. Now my Niece has to decide which files she wants to keep and
which to delete.

In any event, we already recovered 8gb of disk space thanks to all of you
who answered this thread.

God Bless all of you and have a great week.
