IEEE 1284.4 Printing support

Hi,

Can someone please figure out or find a solution to this problem, which i
have realised one too many people are facing. When connecting All-in-one 3055
printer to Windows XP, it recognizes the printer and tries to install it but
cannot find DOT support or IEEE 1284.4 support and it fails to install the
printer properly. I have gone through many rounds fo HP support with the
sending me updated versions of the printer drivers and to no affect. It
doesn't seem to be an HP driver issue but a Windows XP issue as I am able to
install in on other Windows XP machines but not on this particular machine,
where I am running XP on Virtual Machine. I have a Macbook.

So I can neither install it with HP CDs nor does it recognize the printer
when connected to USB port and isntall it. The thing is that it is working
for sure when I connect it on the MAC side without running Virtual machine
and I am able to print! So PLEASE SOMEONE at MICROSOFT solve this issue!!!!

Thanks
Kavitha.

Please note that the support you receive here is provided by volunteer
Microsoft hardware and software users rather than Microsoft employees.
Most Windows users purchased OEM Windows licenses with their computers
that include the stipulation that the computer manufacturer provides any
OS support funded by the OS/computer purchase. Any support OEM license
holders want from Microsoft employees may require payment of support
fees to Microsoft through you preferred credit/debit card provider. This
is one of the reasons why Microsoft permits lower wholesale, and thus
retail, prices for OEM OS licenses than for the "boxed" retail licenses
(the packages you see on software retailer's shelves) which do include a
period of support directly from Microsoft.

A web search confirmed my recollection that IEEE 1284 is a parallel port
standard, NOT a USB standard. Are you using an adapter to connect your
multifunction peripheral? If you are connecting a USB peripheral (no
parallel HARDWARE involved) directly to the computer's USB port or even
through a USB hub I don't understand what IEEE 1284 support has to do
about it. IF you are using an adapter the combination of using a virtual
Windows XP machine on the "foreign" MAC hardware with the parallel to
USB adapter might be to many layers of complexity for the poor drivers
to keep track of.

Then there's the issue of installation sequence. I've read reports that
many instructions for printer installation direct users to install the
software before connecting the printer to the computer. Apparently some
print drivers don't configure properly when the computer is connected
first. Sometimes it's necessary to run the setup on the manufacturer's
installation CD and connect the USB cable when the installation software
directs you to connect it. If the printer was connected before this it
may be necessary to use the Windows device manager to "remove" the
multifunction device. I did however notice that when running the
installation software for another model HP printer/scanner/memory card
adapter on an acquaintance's Windows Vista system the HP software
overrode the printed instructions and recommended using the drivers
provided through Vista (automatically loaded from the hidden partition).

This is Pappi:
First time on here, so may have problems.
After I installed SP3 for WINXP, I now have multiple entries of my HP
printer (Officejet 7210, which is connected via a 4 port usb hub.

It was working fine before the installation of SP3; it was visible through
USB port 1 (even though connected through that 4 por hub) and was also shared
by one or more other computers on my in-house workgroup.

Now, there are multiple entries of the HP printer when I view system
information: 1 is as a SCII Hard Drive; three are as IEEE 1284.4 Printers.

Now I can no longer reach it via the other computers in the WorkGroup.

My conclusion is that I "messed up" the SP3 installation and will have to
remove it and try to re-install it. I have no restart point to go back to,
etc. and I hate to "mess with" the registry. Have too much useful data on
the hard drives that do not want to loose.

I am getting older and used to be a responable "techie", but short-term
memory is bad, so sort of prone to mistakes.

But to your problem: Have you recently upgrade to SP3?
