IE7

We have heard that IE7 has recently been released my MS and also that it will
be an 'automatic' update. Is that true? Will it be listed in the Critical
Updates section or will it download/execute automatically?
And, since we have a dial-up service, is there a way to get a free IE7
(installation) CD (such as we received for IE6)?
We are senior citizens and do not want anything to be done 'automatically'
to our computer that might produce future problems, etc.

We have WinXPsp2 home edition.
Thank you for any enlightening responses.

The Automatic Update feature has four setting (to choose among them,
right-click on My Computer and choose Properties): automatic, download but
let me choose when to install, notify me but don't download, don't do
anything automatically. It's your choice.

I haven't heard anything about that, so I doubt it.

I'm a senior citizen too, but I'm not sure why that should be relevant for
either of us. I personally choose the "notify me but don't download" option.

And my experience is that IE7 is just fine and has caused no problems on any
of my machines here.

Thanks for your response.
I mentioned that we are senior citizens because we are not too familiar with
computers and would not want something to install automatically and then if
something did go wrong, we would not know what to do. We only have this one
notebook and if it were 'corrupted' by a downloaded program, we would be
'lost.'

Forgot to ask. Is it recommended that we download and install IE7 right now,
or should we wait a while?

You're welcome. Glad to help.

Ok, but my point is that senior citizens can be just as familiar with
computers as anyone else. As I said, I too am a senior citizen, but I'm very
familiar with computers, and I know many others like me.

As I said, "my experience is that IE7 is just fine and has caused no
problems on any of my machines here." I can't guarantee you a similar
experience, but I would install it.

Boy, so confusing!
Will the IE7 over-write IE6 (that is already on our machine)?
(With our dial-up, the download will take a long time. And we do have ZA 6,
which we understand, must be uninstalled.)

Yes, IE7 will over-write IE6. Better bet would be to get Firefox. It's
a more secure browser.

If you really must install this thing and are on dial-up, then simply
enlist the help of a friend that is on broadband and have them
download and burn to CD the IE7 Installation file for you.
And we do have ZA 6, which we understand, must be uninstalled.)

I hadn't heard that one about IE7 yet. I also run ZA (Pro version
6.5.737) and would NEVER take it down in order to make something else
work. If something requires me to take my firewall down in order to
work, then I would have extreme suspicions of that product and its
maker's true intentions not that M$ would ever do anything underhanded
or try to slip something by under false pretenses.....

Alice, you can download internet explorer 7 from Microsoft's home page It is
worth it as I have it. Yes doing it by dial up is long but it worth it.
There is no cd for it, sorry. Unless you know someone with a computer, a cd
burner and highspeed interent perhaps they could make you a copy for you.
That would be a suggestion. I do it for my mom all the time for big installs
from Microsoft as she is a senior citzen and does not understand computers
(installing this stuff mainly).

As for IE7 overwritting IE6 yes it does, but if you get it installed (IE7)
you probally will like it very much so. But just in case you don't you can
always uninstall it by going to start, then control panel then add and
remove programs. Once in there make just look for windows internet explorer
7 and then click on remove and it will be taken out, and your internet
explorer 6 will be back with no complications.

Hope that helps you in deciding what to do, best of luck!

Thanks Ed:
In one of the posts above, PAbear has
site:(http://msmvps.com/blogs/spywaresucks/archive/2006/10/18/182724.aspx)
that advises (among other things):
"7- If you are running ZoneAlarm 6.5, disconnect from the internet,
uninstall ZoneAlarm, make sure Windows Firewall is enabled, reconnect to the
internet then install IE7."
I am using ZA 6.5.737.000, which I believe is the latest issue for 'free' ZA.

I have another computer with NIS 2005, which I presume MUST be DISABLED.

Lord! I read the installation on the hoops you have to go through to
install this beast at the bottom of that thread and am amazed but not
that surprised knowing the origin of the product. I have NEVER seen
such instructions having to be initiated in order to get a program
successfully installed before.

Again... just another reason to stay away from this beast for now or
at least for 6 or so months until someone that knows what they are
doing gets all these bugs ironed out of this thing and to make sure
third party people have time to check it out and report to the public
of any hidden skulduggery code (ie, WGA Fiasco).

If any installation requires you to drop your protections (AV and/or
FW) while connected to the Internet then STAY AWAY FROM THEM! They do
not have your best interest at heart.

This thing is not necessary to continue to do what you have already
been doing on the web. It is not necessary that you Just Have to Have
this thing. It is not worth the risk of putting you into one of the
many failed installation discussions on here and other forums I have
been reading.

Lets put it this way.... If you want me to upgrade something on your
car and I tell you to leave it unlocked with the doors wide open on
the side of the Internet (Interstate) and I will get to it.... Would
you go through with it much less question my true intent and motives?

Thanks Ed:
Guess you are NOT using IE7. Presume you are using Mozilla (can I mention
that name)?

I agree Ed.

Installed and uninstalled within 30 minutes. What a beast of a
program it is, is correct.

Guess you are NOT using IE7. Presume you are using Mozilla (can I mention
that name)?

I have not upgraded to version 7 because of the afore mentioned
reasons plus dozens of other stories I have read about this thing so
you are right, I am not using IE7 and will not until I start seeing a
lot more positive comments about it which with most M$ products should
take around 6-12 months.

I use both IE6 and Mozilla. You will read pros and cons on both if
you search the forums and most are true pros and cons. For me, the
jury is still out on Mozilla as far as me selecting one or the other
to be the one and only on my system.

Putting all my negative commentary about IE7 aside, let me just
suggest that you wait until the smoke clears on this one (IE7) just to
play it safe. I can't see any reason why anyone should just have to
have it right now. Let the computer savvy ones, the ones with enough
knowledge to rebuild the soft side of their systems play with this
thing before you chance your system to the unknown.

Also, TURN OFF AUTO UPDATE if you haven't already. I have mine set to
notify but not install. That way I know when they come out (Usually
on Black Tuesday) but choose which ones I allow on my system. If you
are unsure of the true intentions of any updates, hit the forums and
see what the buzz on each one is before installing.

Its a real shame that along with all the ugly things (Virii, Trojans,
Spyware, Adware, Malware, etc., etc.....) one has to guard against in
their computing day that they also have to remain vigilant against the
maker of their Operating System.

Regards,
Ed

And all of that is going to be automated so as to install as an update?
Hmmm...

Remember the last infamous WGA that phoned home that M$ cloaked in the
disguise of a Critical Update? Now this.... Just another reason in a
long line of reasons to turn AUTO UPDATE OFF! M$ has shown more than
once that they can not be trusted to be given that "Open Door" policy
into people's systems.

Did you get the thing uninstalled without a hitch? I've been reading
accounts where the uninstall did more damage than the install leaving
some to have to do a complete system reinstallation.
