Installing Service Pack 3 on top if IE7

After doing all the critical updates I'm ready to install SP3. I've already
installed IE7, and I know that if I install SP3 on top of IE7, IE7 will
become non-removable. Since IE6 is obsolete and IE7 seems to work OK, is
there any good reason to uninstall IE7, install SP3 and then reinstall IE7?
That is, is there any reason SP3 should be installed befoe IE7 other than
the latter's non-removability?

No...
IE8 has been out for awhile and it is better than 6 or 7
Do SP3 and then IE8

The only reason not to do this is to make it easier to perform a Repair
Install. Then again, if you make an image of your drive, you wouldn't
need to worry about performing a Repair Install in the first place. ;-)

I haven't heard of Repair Installs. How would you know it needs to be done,
and how does one do it?
I did plan to make an image copy of the drive, but I've never had to test
this process to make sure that restoring the image works, so ...

Some reasons are listed here:

Here is a more thorough guide:

I use Acronis True Image, and I always "validate" the archive once it is
made. I've only needed to restore an image a handful of times, but it
always worked flawlessly.

With regard to IE7 and SP3, you probably won't have any issues if you
upgrade to SP3 while IE is at IE7 version. But that is not a 100%
guarantee! :)

If you are interested in the "Best Practices" method, you need to
uninstall IE7, which would leave you with IE6. *Then* you would install
SP3. Once SP3 is installed you may upgrade IE6 to either IE7 or IE8.

For best results, do not use Automatic Updates for SP3 (or IE7 or IE8
for that matter). For direct downloads, see:
