IE6 won't reinstall

Michael

I posted a question yesterday about trying to reinstall IE6. Someone posted a reply that suggest to go to this link:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;q318378

I tried that and was able to start the download and install process. When trying to install, it gets to about 9% and displays an error message that says software installing has not passed Windows logo testing for compatibility with XP. I tried several more times and got the same message every time. Is there anything else I can do to get IE on XP to reinstall?

Just click on the VBS file. It will rename the CatRoot2 folder
(Windows\System32\CatRoot2) and then run (right click/install) the ie.inf
(Windows\inf\ie.inf).

See these pages:

Do I replace that file or what do I need to do? Thanks.

The instructions from the top of the page:

To use the Regedits: Save the REG File to your hard disk. Double click it
and answer yes to the import prompt. REG files can be viewed in Notepad by
right clicking on the file and selecting Edit.

To use the VBS Files: Download .vbs file and save it to your hard drive (you
may want to right click and use Save Target As). Double click the vbs
file. You will be prompted when the script is done.

NOTE: If your anti-virus software warns you of a "malicious" script, this
is normal if you have "Script Safe" or similar technology enabled. These
scripts are not malicious, but they do make changes to the System Registry.

Thanks for everyone's help. I still couldn't do a full reinstall (must have missed a step), but I was able to correct all the problems I had with IE. Some very useful information.
