IE6 won't open links in new window

Carey Holzman

I have IE6, with XP with Sp2. Lately, when I click on a link, the link works
UNLESS the link wants to open a new window. If a new window is to open, IE
just locks up. I have to hit CTRL-ALT-DEL to END TASK.

I disabled the Google Pop-up blocker and the built-in pop-up blocker that
comes with IE6SP2.

I re-installed SP2 on top of itself.

I checked for Ad-ware and rebuilt the WinSock.

I installed Firefox and all links work correctly within Firefox.

I did a virus scan (as a second opinion to my anti virus software) at Trend
Micro.

I went to Sun Micro and downloaded and installed the latest JAVA software.

The problem still occurs. I have been running Sp2 for a couple of months now
and never had this problem before.

Anyone have any ideas?

FWIW: I can click File and New Window, and it opens just fine. It's only
when I click on links that want to open in a new window that the lock-up
occurs.

Thanks,
Carey

Hi,
Try this command to re-register all IE DLLs (works with XP SP2 only)
iexplore.exe /rereg

Any other security programs running that might be causing this?

A long shot, but I've seen a report that enabling or disabling AutoFill in
the Google toolbar may help.

Check these pages for other possibilities:

This may achieve the same thing but when IE 6 went stupid on me, (it kept
closing with an error and sending off so many reports to MS that I must have
filled a server or two) I used
Run

regsvr32 urlmon.dll

I will not say all my troubles went away, but the IE6 ones did!

Thanks, but it made no difference in IE's behavior.

The only security program I have running is McAfee AntiVirus. Not the full
suite, just the anti-virus.

Thanks!

Yeah, I saw that posted before and it was one of the things I tried before I
posted my question. Unfortunately, it didn't work for me.

Thanks,

I have SP2 so I can see all the BHOs with Internet Explorers 'Manage
Add-Ons' tool.

Thanks just the same...

Turns out by using the Advanced options in the Internet Options icon of the
Control Panel and deselecting "Enable third-party browser extensions" it
seemed to cure the problem. So I re-enabled it and started deselecting BHO's
using the Manage Add-Ons tool of IE6 with XP SP2, to determine that
Acrobat.dll was causing the lock-up and is described as
"Acrobat.ExplorerHook"

The help from MS was as follows:

Step 1: Clean up cookie information and reload some default IE settings.

1. Open IE, click Tools and click Internet Options.

2. Click "Delete Cookies" and select Yes when to confirm.

3. Click "Delete Files" and select Yes when to confirm.

4. Switch to the Security tab, select Internet and click "Default Level".

5. Switch to the Privacy tab, click "Default".

6. Switch to the Advanced tab, Click "Restore Defaults" button and then
deselect "Enable third-party browser extensions".

Then click OK to quit.

Step 2: Clean Boot

a. Click Start, go to Run, and type "msconfig" in the open box to start the
System Configuration Utility.

b. Click the Services tab, check the "Hide All Microsoft Services" box and
click Disable All (if it is not gray).

c. Click the Startup tab, click Disable All and click OK.

Note: If some items are related to your Internet Connection, please keep
them enabled.

Then, restart your computer. When the "System Configuration Utility" window
appears, please check the "Don't show this message or launch the System
Configuration Utility when Windows starts" box and click OK.

Note: Temporarily disabling the Startup Group only prevents the startup
programs from loading at startup. This shouldn't affect the system or other
programs. We may still run these programs manually later.

Turns out by using the Advanced options in the Internet Options icon of the
Control Panel ... <SNIP>

That could really be uesful to someone else, you might want to post it
as a reply to your original thread so that people will see it. I doubt
that anyone with the same problem as you is going to guess that their
answer is under "Answering my own question".

He did post it as an answer to his original thread.

That's why I posted it... So it would be useful to others and archived on
Google so if I forget, I can do a search and find it in the future. :)

Did you try to find it? By leaving no trace of the original Subject
you have caused Google Groups to separate the two subthreads
into unassociated pages.

<
http://groups.google.com/groups?hl=...insubject%3Alinks+group%3Amicrosoft.*.browser >

<
http://groups.google.com/groups?hl=...bject%3Aanswering+group%3Amicrosoft.*.browser >

<

In addition this makes it difficult for users of other newsreaders
to find the complete discussion with a single search.
For example, OE users have to do two separate finds
or at best restrict their finds to posts by you without any other
criteria except perhaps a date range.

Please, if you change the Subject line leave the original Subject text
in it. To leave others maximum flexibility I suggest that the change
be appended to the original Subject text instead of prefixing it as some
tend to do. For example, suffixed changes allow sorts by Subject
to group both the original subthread and subsequent variations.
More importantly I think that you will have a better chance that Google
Groups will tie both subthreads into one result.
