IE6: screen text not visible

A

Aquamarine

I am running Windows XP and IE 6 and for about a week, I've had a problem
that on most websites, some or all text is not showing. For example on Yahoo
home page where they have news stories boxes, they appear as a white blank
box and the search feature box is not functional. When I pull up Google, it
is totally blank. I have tried to change the font settings under
Tools-Internet Options but that does not correct the problem. I am also
having problems seeing the text in some received emails in Outlook (Office
03) which I suspect is also somehow related.

I initially spent the last few days addressing this problem with Norton
Antivirus because my updates would not load, but we figured out that this is
due to this MS problem because I am not able to see all the text and radio
buttons to select the updates in their software. I spent hours talking with
Norton tech support already and we tried numerous things including deleting
and reinstalling Norton, creating a new user account, opening up in safe
mode, a clean boot, and restored to an earlier date before I was having these
problems and none of them resolved the issue.

Does anyone have advice on additional other things I can try?

Thank you for beginning your own new thread.

Are you running WinXP SP2 or SP3 currently?

Are you running Norton AntiVirus (NAV) or a Norton suite (e.g., Norton 360)?
Is it a 2008-version? Did you upgrade to this Norton application from an
earlier version (e.g., NAV 2005)?

What anti-spyware applications (other than Defender) might be installed?

If your Norton application doesn't include the Norton Personal Firewall
(does it?), what third-party firewall (if any) might be installed?

Is Automatic Updates enabled? Are you still unable to access/use Windows
Update website?

Open Control Panel | Add/Remove Programs | Make sure the "Show Updates" box
is checked | Scroll down and tell me the name of the last five (5) updates
that were installed [e.g., "Security Update for Windows XP (KB999999)"] and
the date each was installed.

=============================

The above notwithstanding (please answer my questions even if the steps
below resolve your issues):

=> Start | Run | (copy/paste) net stop wuauserv | OK

=> Start | Run | (copy/paste) regsvr32 MSXML3.DLL | OK

=> Repeat for each of the following, in turn:

regsvr32 wuapi.dll
regsvr32 wups.dll
regsvr32 wuaueng.dll
regsvr32 wuaueng1.dll
regsvr32 wucltui.dll
regsvr32 wuweb.dll
regsvr32 MSXML3.dll
regsvr32 qmgr.dll
regsvr32 qmgrprxy.dll
regsvr32 jscript.dll
regsvr32 wscript.dll

net start wuauserv

=> Reboot.

I went through all the steps you gave and the problem still persists. Here
are answers to your questions:

- Running WinXp SP2
- NAV, upgraded from 2007 version, nothing is currently installed due to
problems
- Anti-spyware: not sure where to find on my computer what else is installed
- can you tell me where to look this up?
- Auto-updates are enabled and I am able to open up the link for this
Windows website
- Last 5 updates: KB951748 (7/10/08); KB951376-v2 (6/20/08); KB950760
(6/10/08); KB950762 (6/10/08); KB951376 (6/10/08)

Any other ideas of things to try?

Forgot to mention that when I entered "regsvr32 wscript.dll" I got the
following message: "Load library ("wscript.dll") failed. Specified module
could not be found." Not sure if this helps point to the problem?

It's probably a typo for wscript.exe.

DLL Help Database supports this idea (but probably doesn't include Vista
though since you are reporting an incident with IE6 this wouldn't matter).

http://support.microsoft.com/dllhelp/?dlltype=file&l=55&alpha=wscript*&S=1

Not sure if wscript.exe is registerable or not...

Dependency Walker (depends.exe) says not.

[See Robert's reply. That should have been WSCRIPT.EXE, not WSCRIPT.DLL.]

Did you upgrade to NAV 2008 or another Norton application (e.g., Norton
Internet Security; Norton 360)? Was your subscription for the 2007 version
still current when you upgraded?

Are you currently running without an anti-virus application installed? (Not
a good idea.)

Open Control Panel | Security Center: What status is reported for (a)
anti-virus; (b) firewall, and (c) Automatic Updates? (Ideally, all 3 should
be OK/green.)

If you uninstall "Security Update for Windows XP (KB951748") via Add/Remove
Programs, does the behavior persist?
