IE6 or IE&

C

Curt Christianson

Good morning all,

I do realize that this is a gen. disc. group, but I figured I might receive
more un-biased opinions here.

I received a recent Microsoft newsletter *strongly* advocating the use of
IE7 over 6, especially for security reasons. The particular article from MS
on this, referenced in the newsletter is:
http://windowshelp.microsoft.com/Windows/en-US/Help/a426bb85-708c-4b75-87e2-874f9be3b4aa1033.mspx

It does make IE7 sound quite attractive.

My question to any of you who care to comment is this: Since the release of
IE7, all I seem to run into are posts with problems related to IE&. I
really became "gun-shy" of it, and chose to wait until the "bugs" were out
of it. Any opinions here? Should I make the switch? I already have tabbed
browsing available to me by using MyIE2. So, even though I'll still use my
standard signature, you might also find the sig. "Confused" appropriate.
All opinions welcome, but please, no MS bashing, or suggesting a different
browser like Firefox.

Many other MS links from the newsletter are available upon request.
Thank you so much.

Please excuse the double-post. For some reason some of my posts get "stuck"
in the Outbox, and when I force it out of there, I get a double-post.

Title should also read IE6 & IE7

I am in exactly the same quandary - and I bet I am not alone.

When IE7 first came out I downloaded it. I had so much trouble with it
that I quickly uninstalled it which returned me to IE6 where I've been
since. I too was planning to go back to it at a later time but because
of my bad experience with it and the inability to have both IE6 and IE7
on the same PC till I learned the idiosyncrasies and differences of IE7,
I was reluctant to redownload it.

So, I too would love to hear what other have to say about this.

There have been a couple of security fixes for IE6 and it is OK.
I will never go to IE7 unless I am forced to do so by upgrading
to Vista and that is very, very unlikely for at least three or
four years.

Jeff and Doug,

Thanks for the input. I hope we get a lot more. Had I posted this on the
IE group, I think things would have tended to be biased a bit.

An FYI, MyIE2, which is now called Maxthon, is a great add-on to IE. It
actually runs on top of IE , gives you tabbed browsing which is great, does
so many things that there is definitely a learning curve. I do use the
"old" version called IE2, simply because this machine is old, and I want to
keep any apps I install as "lite" as possible. I'm betting Maxthon is even
better.

What really sold me on MyIE2, is most everyone knows that IE takes a heck of
a lot of resources all by itself. When multiple instances of it open up,
the resources are really shot. I decided back when I was running W98SE to
see how many IE's only, I could open before the machine crashed, I opened
18 instances successfully, but things were running *real* slow. Opening the
19th instance crashed everything.

My IE2, with it's tabbed browsing doesn't suffer from that. I open over 30
instances (tabs) of different sites , and still had plenty of resources. I
gave up trying to crash it when I was somewhere in the 30's.
A link with some info. from one of my favorite sites, just scroll down to
"Maxthon". Please bear in mind, there is a learning curve, or there was for
this thick head.:

Forgot to mention, the software is free.

I am so happy to hear that. I prefer to stay right where I am as long
as the security fixes continue. (Same with Vista).

Sure. It's the very nature of newsgroups. Whenever anything new comes
out, those people who have problems with it (and there are always
some, for a wide variety of reasons) post in the newsgroups looking
for help with their problems. Those (and that includes almost everyone
I know using IE7, including me) who have no problems with it very
seldom come to the newsgroups just to sing its praises.

I
really became "gun-shy" of it, and chose to wait until the "bugs" were out
of it. Any opinions here?

It's running on all four of my machines here, and I haven't a single
problem with it on any of them.

Should I make the switch?

I would, if I were you.

I already have tabbed
browsing available to me by using MyIE2.

MyIE2 runs as a shell on top of IE, but upgrading to IE7 will still
give you its security improvements.

As an aside, MyIE2 was replaced by Maxthon. The new version of
Maxthon, Maxthon 2, just came out. I ran Maxthon 1 on top of IE6 and
IE7 and I'm now running Maxthon 2 on top of IE7. The Maxthon 2/IE7
combination is far and away my favorite browser. Go to
http://www.maxthon.com/ It's still free. If you like MyIE2, you'll
probably like Maxthon 2 even more.

Me three! As to security, I really don't worry about that as I've
taken what I believe are as agressive steps as possible at
reasonable cost and annoyance factors. Plus, wrt to anything MS,
especially IE, all I see and hear is security hype but not true
security. Moreover, I don't know precisely what a browser might do
for me if I were to soften my cynicism here.

Interesting advice; I'll park these suggestions for if/when I
