IE6 not closing properly

J

jd

Using IE6 - XP-Pro + all current updates

*sometimes* when closing/exiting IE the screen page disappears but the tab
on the bottom tool bar indicates it is still live (but won't maximise if
clicked).

Doing alt-ctl-del shows that the prog is still running. End task usually
works but sometimes it takes a reboot to clear.

Any ideas what is causing this and how to correct?

TIA

When all else fails, HijackThis v1.99.1
(http://aumha.org/downloads/hijackthis.zip) is the preferred tool to use.
It will help you to both identify and remove any hijackware/spyware. **Post
your log to http://aumha.net/viewforum.php?f=30,
http://castlecops.com/forum67.html,
http://forums.subratam.org/index.php?showforum=7, or other appropriate
forums for expert analysis, not here.**

If the procedures look too complex - and there is no shame in admitting this
isn't your cup of tea - take the machine to a local, reputable and
independent (i.e., not BigBoxStoreUSA) computer repair shop.

Sorry - this is not the solution - there are no malware/spyware/viruses on
the machine - this has been checked running over 20 progs with nothing
showing up.

Thanks for the suggestion tho'

Suit yourself. We're constantly seeing HijackThis logs from users like
yourself who say no anti-spyware or AV app has found anything.

The behavior you describe does sound like it's being caused by hijackware or
a Trojan/virus. Best to post your HijackThis log to a reputable forum for
analysis by an expert before you rule this out, David.

Note that the same suggestion could be used to identify
(perhaps less inflammatorily) "interfering third-party programs".

E.g. you can disable all BHO via the Advanced tab
(to test if some may be causing your symptom)

<title>KB298931 - How to Disable Third-Party Tool Bands and Browser Helper Objects</title>

then isolate problem causers individually
using XPsp2's Manage Add-ons tool.

<title>KB883256 - How to manage Internet Explorer add-ons in Windows XP Service Pack 2</title>

Also note that some incompatibilities are thought to be only resolvable
by uninstalling the offender. E.g. some popular toolbars cause problem
symptoms which don't go away when users simply try to disable them.
I have never studied such cases but I would suspect that what it implies
is that the package's install caused an incompatibility and the package's
uninstall restored things to normal.
