IE6 error on startup

I am having problems starting IE6 SP1 running under win 2000. Earlier today
I had some malware (Adlogix) try to install itself setting off my firewall
software and causing IE to crash with the 'Microsoft Internet Explorer Has
Encountered a Problem and Needs to Close' message.

When I tried to restart IE, the message 'Access to the specified device,
path, or file is denied' came up. I then ran Adaware, Spybot and did a full
virus check. This resulted in the removal of some adlogix files. I tried IE
again and got the same error.

I have tried reinstalling IE6, but still get the same error.

I can get into IE via Windows Explorer, but cannot open it directly. I have
full admin rights on the machine, and the problem is the same with all other
log on names.

And did you first seek updates for Ad-aware, Spybot, and your anti-virus
application?

I'd throw CWShredder in there, too...

Run these tools in the following order with nothing else running in
background:

1. CWShredder (fix all found)

2. Ad-Aware (fix all found)

3. Spybot (RTFM but generally fix everything in red)

Important: You *must* seek updates for Ad-Aware, Spybot, etc., before each
and every use, even "right out of the box". But even they can't catch
everything, 24/7. When all else fails, HijackThis
(http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/files/HijackThis.exe) is the preferred
tool to use. It will help you to both identify and remove any
hijackware/spyware. **Post your files to http://forums.spywareinfo.com/ or
http://forum.mvps.org/viewforum.php?f=30 for expert analysis, not here.**

[Alternate download pages for many of the above tools may be found at
http://aumha.org/a/parasite.htm.]

Also update your virus definitions and then run a full system scan. From
now on, do both daily.

So How Did I Get Infected Anyway?

Sorry, forgot to mention that I also ran CW shredder. All programs
(CWShredder, Spybot, Ad-Aware and Norton AntiVirus) were updated and current
before I ran the checks.

The reason I was infected was that I inadvertently pressed accept rather
than reject when the ActiveX 'run this program' dialog opened. I also have
Kerio Personal Firewall running and this intercepted and stopped the Adlogix
install, but not until some of the files had been downloaded.

I'm going to run through all the suggestions that you made later today, but
I wonder whether the partial install of the Adlogix software has corrupted
an IE or system file or maybe the registry?
