IE6 Crashes

S

SkipBorg

IE crashes continually. I get the message "Internet Explorer has encounted
a problem and must shut down".

If I ignore the message and just drag it off the screen, everything seems to
work fine.

I have run "sfc /scannow", I have reinstalled the operating system, I have
run CHKDSK, I have defragmented the disk. Nothing will work. The problem
continues.

I am running Windows XP Pro on a Matrix computer (Intel motherboard &
Pentium 3 processor).

I also have crash problems with WM Player, Real Player, and Yahoo Messenger
when trying to connect to radio stations. I have reinstalled them all and
the problem continues. I suspect they all result from the same problem.

Any help will be greatly appreciated. I am at the end of my abilities.

Frank,

Thanks for your interest.

Not mentioned previously, I have updated everything from Microsoft Update
several times, I use McAfee anti-virus with auto updates, I use Microsoft
AntiSpyWare with auto update, I have a Linksis wired router (do not enable
XP firewall).

Following your suggestions, I downloaded Ad-Aware, updated it, ran it, and
deleted a bunch of cookies. I then downloaded Hijackthis and ran the scan.
The log is shown below..

So far, I still have the problem.

I don't know for sure that the problem is due to malware infection. Could
it be a corrupted or missing component somewhere?

Any other thoughts?

Thanks again.

Try capturing the Error Signature. Click on <click here> to see it.
Unfortunately there is no right-click menu associated with that text
but you can use keyboard edit commands on it. E.g. doubleclick
on word in it, press Ctrl-a and Ctrl-c to capture it to ClipBoard.

Alternatively, look in Event Viewer.

Or Run... msinfo32 /category SWEnvWindowsError
Warning: depending on your date format the time field may not sort
as expected so you might have to hunt for the latest crash signature.

If drwtsn32 hasn't been disabled and is capturing dumps for these events
then you could select a dump, click View and capture it into Notepad
using the same Ctrl-a, Ctrl-c technique.

The most useful information from a dump is the Stack Back Trace
for the crashing task. In an English dump the crash address is prefixed
by FAULT ->. Find that and then scroll down to the Stack Back Trace
section. There are clues in there about what led up to the crash.
Often the caller is the culprit rather than the crashing module
which is just a victim.

Alternatively, if you think the problem symptoms are easily recreatable
you could do some clean-boot troubleshooting. E.g. start removing
or disabling all those third-party things that are listed in your HJT log.
If the problem symptoms stop you can then figure out precisely why.

Good luck
