IE6 can't access web

Win98SE, IE6
Been fine for months.
This is my daughter's computer so I'm not sure where she's been or
what she might have installed just before the problems started.

IE launches fine, but 'can't find websites' - No error message just a
blank page.

Removed sahagent & incredifind from system.

I had already cleared the cache, cookies & history, but the directions
for removal of Increifind said to go to tools/internetoptions/programs
and reset Web settings. The link to 'internet options' no longer
appeared in her tools menu. I went to Control panel, made the change
& the menu was repaired-- but IE still couldn't reach the web.

When I type a URL in I can see a series of links scrolling through
real fast on the left side of the status bar. [where links show up
when I hold my curser over a link in my IE6]

Scanned with gwshredder & ran lspfix.exe.
[I can't find any winsock2 on her machine-- or on mine for that
matter-- both using W98SE ]

Ran Spybot S&D which found some more stuff & fixed them-- but still
nothing from IE.

Installed Winpatrol which found these 3 'IE Helpers' in addition to
Adobe's Acrobat helper and her Google Toolbar;
NavExcel - removed
Better Internet - removed

The 3d had no name listed, but was associated with auwkubttod.dll.
[no luck finding it through either Google or Google Groups - except
that it is an acronym for 'And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of
Dead']

I deleted the dll & all references to it in the Registry. There were
many and I should have noted the website it was associated with but I
hit delete before I thought of it. [Is there an easy way to read
Registry backups?]

Now IE displays the error message "Page Cannot be displayed" - the
DNS error. [BTW- her internet connection is working as she is running
AIM or MSN messenger.]

Can anyone suggest my next move?

Thanks,
Jim

Cannot access any site?
See: http://www.cexx.org/lspfix.htm
download and run the fix.

Thanks for trying-- but note that I wrote- [copy pasted from below

Also, please correct me if I'm wrong, but if she can ping and use AIM
and MSN Messenger doesn't that mean her winsock is working?
