IE6 and Pop Ups

I recently was getting an error msg that was resolved by upgrading to
the newest version of Zone Alarm. After the upgrade, I had to
reconfigure permissions for various programs to access the internet (I
have a cable connection).
I have both IE6 and Mozilla Firefox on my computer. Every morning when
I log on (computer is left on all the time), or if I leave the computer
for an hour or 2 and come back, there are a number of pop up ads (with
IE title bars).
This never used to have this happen before.

Did I "mis"configure Zone Alarm?

Ideally I would like to disable IE, but not remove it - is this
possible?

I have also ran various ad-aware/spybot removal programs, but no
change. Any thoughts would be helpful.
