ie won't start and freezes computer

This problem is happening intermittently, but it is really annoying when it
does happen. When opening IE, the program doesn't open. iexplore.exe shows
up under processes. Continuing to click on IE simply opens up more processes
(my spouse did that one). Sometimes I can get the processes to close; other
times, my computer freezes up completely. It seems to happen more when we
switch users, but it can happen with the first user on the computer.

When IE does open correctly (which is most of the time), there seem to be no
problems with the program. And I'm not having any problems with speed or
with other programs.

Here is some info on the computer:
Dimension 4600 Pentium 4 3.00 GHz with 512 MB RAM
XP Version 2002 with Service Pack 2
Windows is set to automatic updates daily
IE Version 6.0.2900.2180.xpsp_sp2_gdr.050301-1519
Norton Internet Security AntiSpyWare Edition 2005 Version 8.5.0.113
(AntiVirus version is 11.5.7.2)
NIS is set to Automatic Live Update
NIS scans show no problems whatsoever
Dell Crash Analysis Tool indicated that tfsnifs.sys and vsdatant.sys might
need updated (what do those things do?)

Any suggestions would be appreciated -- especially if they go beyond the use
more programs to scan for viruses and spyware!

NIS will not catch all malware.
