My dial-up connection to my ISP works fine. The problem arose when I
installed grisoft's antivirus freeware and found I was unable to download
virus definition updates. Its "help" indicates it is using Internet
Explorer's dial-up information, not my ISP's. So I went to
IE and clicked through internet options/connections/dial-up settings. Aha!
The password IE is using is NOT what I'm using to connect to my ISP. That
was obvious because the number of asterisks is not the same. So it was
simply a matter of changing IE's password to conform to that of my ISP's,
right?
Wrong. I can substitute the right password in IE, but I can't make it
stick. There's no "save changes" or "apply" option to click after the
change, so IE continues to use the wrong password. Which means I can't
download antivirus updates, despite attempts at workarounds.
I'm using WinXPpro. Its IE help files do not appear to be updated to XP,
and in any event I was unable to find anything to address this problem.
I've been a windows user since 3.1 and only recently moved from 98 to XP.
So while I'm no novice, from experience I have to
allow there may be something obvious that I'm overlooking.
Any suggestions? Please post to the group.
