IE opens on it's own

This is something that I haven't dealt with before. My IE 7 opens after
about 20 minutes on its own. BY the morning, I have 7 separate windows open.
I tried searching MS but had no luck. My system is clean from viruses and
Spyware. As well I use the latest version of Webroot's Spy Sweeper.

It's not going anywhere bad. Just opens in a blank page. I appreciate any
thoughts on this.

If you are using any version of Sun Java that is prior to JRE Version 5.0 update 9,
then you are strongly urged to remove any/all versions.
There are vulnerabilities in them and they are actively being exploited.

It is highly suggested that you update to the latest version which is Sun Java JRE/JSE
Version 5.0 Update 9

Simple check, look under...
C:\Program Files\Java

The only folder under that folder should be the latest version.

Such as...
C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.5.0_09

For non-viral malware...

Please download, install and update the following software...

* Ad-aware SE v1.06
http://www.lavasoft.de/
http://www.lavasoftusa.com/
http://www.lavasoft.de/ms/index.htm

* SpyBot Search and Destroy v1.4
http://security.kolla.de/
http://www.safer-networking.org/microsoft.en.html

* SuperAntiSpyware
http://www.superantispyware.com/superantispywarefreevspro.html

After the software is updated, I suggest scanning the system in Safe Mode.

I also suggest downloading, installing and updating BHODemon for any Browser Helper Objects
that may be on the PC.

* BHODemon

For viral malware...

* Download MULTI_AV.EXE from the URL --
http://www.ik-cs.com/programs/virtools/Multi_AV.exe

To use this utility, perform the following...
Execute; Multi_AV.exe { Note: You must use the default folder C:\AV-CLS }
Choose; Unzip
Choose; Close

Execute; C:\AV-CLS\StartMenu.BAT
{ or Double-click on 'Start Menu' in C:\AV-CLS }

NOTE: You may have to disable your software FireWall or allow WGET.EXE to go through your
FireWall to allow it to download the needed AV vendor related files.

C:\AV-CLS\StartMenu.BAT -- { or Double-click on 'Start Menu' in C:\AV-CLS}
This will bring up the initial menu of choices and should be executed in Normal Mode.
This way all the components can be downloaded from each AV vendor's web site.
The choices are; Sophos, Trend, McAfee, Kaspersky, Exit this menu and Reboot the PC.

You can choose to go to each menu item and just download the needed files or you can
download the files and perform a scan in Normal Mode. Once you have downloaded the files
needed for each scanner you want to use, you should reboot the PC into Safe Mode [F8 key
during boot] and re-run the menu again and choose which scanner you want to run in Safe
Mode. It is suggested to run the scanners in both Safe Mode and Normal Mode.

When the menu is displayed hitting 'H' or 'h' will bring up a more comprehensive PDF help
file. http://www.ik-cs.com/multi-av.htm

When you say "I have done the update" I assume you mean for sun Java.

Java is NOT the source of IE opening on its own. The chances of this being caused by
malware is extremely high. The sun Java version comes into play for its vulnerabilities and
mitigation of any/all exploitation of it.

You need to do the scans by the anti malware software I provided you. You say "...system is
clean from viruses and Spyware..." but have NOT proved this to be true. Just because you
ran Webroot's Spy Sweeper, that's completely insufficient.

Hi David,

You are absolutely right. I will run your suggestions immediately. It was
only the Sun Java updates I did. I then had a idea that perhaps in the
options in Spy Sweeper that says check daily or hourly for updates might be
the cause. I checked Hourly and so far haven't seen anything.....Yet.

However the same option is checked on my other system and IE doesn't pop up.
So let me try the link you provided and see where that might go.

Thanks again in advance,
Sam

Mine didn't open a webpage but instead opened iexplore.exe in the task
manager. I could end task it but it would be opened again 5 minutes
later. So I set off on an extensive hunt of what program(s) were
opening it. I know my system is infection free, I use over 8 separate
security programs to keep it that way so it wasn't malware. Becoming
disgruntled I disabled iexplore.exe by renaming it to iexplore.ex.
Strangely enough certain programs began to act weird after doing this.
One of my security programs, Avast, wouldn't update and Yahoo Messenger
wouldn't connect. I opened the Avast settings and sure enough it was
using IE settings to auto update so I corrected that (I use Firefox
now). My Yahoo Messenger simply refused to connect at all until I
re-enabled iexplore.exe and as soon as I did, it worked just fine.
Iexplore.exe doesn't open by itself anymore tho so it must have been the
Avast auto updates that was doing it. Anyways, the way I found the
problem was to disable IE and see what stopped working because of it.

Treating the symptom and not the cause !

You are infected. Follow the directions I provided 'dreamer'.
