"IE Has Encountered A Problem and Needs To Close"

B

BLIMPS

Sorry if this question has been asked a million times before guys but I only
have limited time on the PC these days so any help much appreciated.

A friends PC when he is just connected to the net comes up with this
message

"Internet Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close"

Clicking on the data this error report contains shows this Error Signiture -

App Name: iexplore.exe
AppVer:6.0.2600.0
ModName: winshow.dll
ModVer:1.0.0.6
Offset:0000a95e

Clicking on the technical information about the error report gives -

Well ,a whole lot of figures (which I can post if anyone needs them to help
me get a fix) but below that it informs 'The following files will be
included in the error report'

C:\DOCUME~1Hutchy\LOCALS~1\Temp\WER6.tmp.dir00\appcompat.txt

Not to clever on the software side of things so if anybody has a fix keep it
simple please!
Any help much appreciated,

B

Winshow is a spyware object, CoolWebSearch variant. Download CoolWebSearch
destroyer from here:
http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/downloads.html
http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/files/cwshredder.zip
[Exe] http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/files/CWShredder.exe

Seeing you mentioned those two, have you tried Spywarezapper? Trying it for
the first time now. Religiously update Spybot and Adaware and run them and
even after doing that only today, Spywareblaster (still running) says I have
20 new items that neither of the other two picked up. Sounds fishy to me but
wouldn't mind hearing what you have to say, please.

Go to: http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/unwanted.htm
Download "Hijack This!" [freeware]

Unzip, double-click "HijackThis.exe" and Press "Scan".

When the scan is finished, the "Scan" button will change into a "Save Log"
button.
Click: "Save Log" (generates: "hijackthis.log")

Next, go to the below location:
http://www.spywareinfo.com/forums/

Sign in, go to the "Spyware and Hijackware Removal" section.
Press "New Topic", copy and paste hijackthis.log into your new message.

Thanks for that info. I did scan using it and nothing listed there (about 30
entries) was in any way spyware.
