IE Explorer History

J

Joan Quinn

I have searched Google groups for this and tried a few of the suggestions
but none of them work. When I click on my IE6 history icon the only listing
will "Today" and the url I am connected to. If I make a few connections
they will add to the list but as soon as I close IE and go back in their is
no History.

I am not talking about "auto-complete" - that is working.

If I log on as another user it saves the History so I assume IE6 is okay or
that would not happen.

Does anyone have an answer for this?

Hi Joan :)

Try the information below and see if it helps:

Try checking the number of days you have selected to keep the History.

Go to Tools>Internet Options>General>Under History, see how many days you
have in the window there.

also...

IE not keeping my History

Turn off the ActiveX part of McAfee's Internet Filter
If you have McAfee AV running:

McAfee gave this solution to the bug where VirusScan 6 stops your Internet
Explorer History file working. Hope it is of some help:

Open VirusScan console
Select "Pick a task..."
Select "Change my VirusScan settings"
Select "Configure VShield background scanning"
Select "Customise your VShield settings"

Select the "Internet Filter" icon from the icons down the left hand side On
the "Detection" tab, in the 'Applet filters' section, remove the tick next
to "ActiveX Controls".

or..............

Run regedit and navigate to:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER|Software|Microsoft|Internet Explorer|Main

and insure that Save_Session_History_On_Exit is marked YES and not NO. (I
just checked mine, and it is set to NO by default).

also try……:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER|Software|Microsoft|Internet Explorer|TypedURLs

or.............

It could be that the History folder has become damaged or corrupted, try
deleting the folder, then reboot and a new one will be created.

Hope this helps :)

I tried all your suggestions;

I don't use McCafee

The registry item HKEY_CURRENT_USER|Software|Microsoft|Internet
Explorer|Main was set to no and I changed that and it still did not work
even after I rebooted.

I have tried to delete the History folder in the past and it says it is a
folder needed by the system and cannot be deleted.

I really appreciate your help but I have not had any success. The History
builds while I am opening new Windows in explorer but when I close Explorer
all the entries are gone.

To delete the History folder, and have it recreated as empty upon
restarting, see this site:
http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/delcache.htm
You cannot delete the History folder from the same account you are logged in
as - you will need to log into a different account that has Admin.
privileges, and delete it from your account that way.

I followed the instructions exactly and was able to delete both the
"temporary Internet files" folder and the "history" folder. I did a cold
boot and two new folders were created. I visited about a half dozen
different sites and they appeared on the "Today" list but when I close IE6
and reopen it there is nothing on the list.

This is driving me nuts. BTW thanks for any help you can offer.

As an added note. I just checked the new account I set up, with
Administrator options, and it _is not_saving the History either. Now it
looks like it might be an IE6 problem.

I just wanted to thank Jan and Jon for their help and let them know that I
solved my problem. I have a cable connection through Earthlink and although
I never use their software "Total Access 2005" (TA) I had it loading on my
system. When I loaded the toolbar associated with TA and opened the web
from the toolbar I noticed that it was saving the History. I completely
uninstalled TA and rebooted and the History is being saved again in IE6.
I have no idea why running TA in memory caused this problem but perhaps me
leaving this follow up will help someone else who has this issue.

Thanks to all, Joan

I love Usenet and almost always find solutions to my problems here so I know
that value of a complete response.
