IE creates new instance then crashes

G

Guest

Greetings:

I am using Windows XP SP2, and recently i was using IE and when i typed in
an address in the address bar or selected a site from the drop down menu it
would create another instance of itself and then crash. The only way to shut
it down is to go into the task manager, under the processes tab, and close
all instances. However if I close the window which created the new instance,
not this new one, the crashing one creates another instance of IE and that
one crashes too. I did an anti-virus and anti spyware scan, with no luck. I
downloaded and ran HijackThis (where I found multiple instances of RXToolbar,
which I never installed or saw before, and removed them) and still no change.
I can however click on links and use the Home, Back and Forward buttons as
usual, and everything works fine except the address bar. I have removed and
reinstalled SP2, and all of IE's updates, with no luck once again.

Some Google searches also turned up nothing.

Any thoughts?

Hi d'oh :)

Try the following and see if it helps:

Courtesy of Frank Saunders -

Go to Tools>Internet Options> Advanced.
Uncheck "Reuse windows for launching shortcuts".

Also, if you have Google, MSN or Yahoo toolbars, disable them. If you have
Yahoo Companion, uninstall it, as it is known to cause various problems.
Disable your firewall, Earthlink (or another pop-up blocker) My IE2 (a shell
for IE) etc.

You'll have to turn off the feature that's blocking new windows or, perhaps,
uninstall the program (especially uninstall Yahoo Companion).

With some programs of this type, using Ctrl+click or Shift+click will allow
a new window.

If you're *sure* that another program isn't causing this, these links may
help.

I unchecked the "Reuse windows for launching shortcuts" - it worked, however
when I use the address bar to open a website it creates a new window THEN
loads the website in this new window. However it does not crash or create any
more windows after that.

Thanks for all your support this far Jan.

Any ideas how to get rid of this new window thing?

Thanks.

You're very welcome! I'm glad to hear you were able to resolve your
problem.

I agree with Don that if it is still wanting to open in a new window than
malware may be the cause and you should follow through with the information
he has provided to make sure your system if clean of any scumware.

Thank you very much for posting back and letting us know what worked for
you, and for the benefit of other readers who might have a similar problem.
