IE crashing - KBID 892052

IE has been crashing on my PC, and the details are exactly as described in
KBID 892052. The KB article says there is a hotfix from Microsoft for this
issue, which impacts XP SP2. I assembled my PC from scratch myself and
bought and installed an OEM version of XP Pro SP2 with my hardware parts. My
XP was activated and is registered with Microsoft.

Tried Microsoft e-mail support, but because my product ID showed OEM
version, I’m being referred to my “computer manufacturerâ€, or pay for
Microsoft support. Is there any other place from which I can download this
hotfix without having to pay for support?

Microsoft does not charge for hotfix support.
Call them and explain your situation.

Microsoft patches and hotfixes are for free.

However, you did not specify on your post if you have passed the Windows
Genuine Advantage test.

You must pass this test to get the hotfixes you want from Microsoft.

Most PC builders won't be able to help you with your problems because we do
not know how you configured your computer. As the saying goes, "If you
built your computer, you are its technical support."

Take it from me that if IE keeps crashing then the only way is to do a
complete re-install of XP - ideally clean install. No amount of
hotfixes is going to solve this. We have about 300 PCs and from time to
time students manage to sabotage them and that means a dodgy system.

Only a clean install from network image solves the problems.

Because of our large public institution we can't have 100% secure system
because some academics don't like to be controlled how they run their
systems.

Regards,
