IE crashes after 1-3 page views

Internet Explorer 6.0 frequently crashes for me on XP. The
file involved is

C:\DOCUME~1\GEORGE~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\WERDF.tmp.dir00
\appcompat.txt

Is this a spyware/adware related problem? Or what is the
cause -- and the fix?
