IE Attempts to FTP login without prompting for password

If a user has a URL/Favorite as follows..
ftp:\\username@host\mydirectory
IE attempts to login without prompting for a password, resulting in login
errors on the server that can appear as security problems in logs.

Is there a way to force IE to provide the login prompt (for password) prior
to login?

(Yes, i can include the password in the url (username:password), or store
the password in IE, but prefer not to. I can also use a full fledged FTP
client, but prefer not to.)

Thanks for all helpful advice!

I read the suggested artical carefully. Perhaps I am missing something.
It does not address how to have IE prompt for a password BEFORE it
attempts to login the server. This first login attempt, without a password,
is what generates warnings on the server
