IE and accessing search engines

R

Robin

I have one system with Windows 2000 with all the security
updates (done this morning), IE 6 SP 1, virus scanned the
system and I still have this one problem. It is the only
system out of 100 + systems that I have this problem as
described below.

When IE search feature is used (or Yahoo, MSN search, or
try to go to Google.com or Hotbot.com, any search engine)
I get either:
This is the message from IE search or Yahoo search:

404 Not Found -- The requested URL/spresults.aspx was not
found on this server.
Additionally, a 404 not found error was encountered while
trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.

or

(this message is what I got when I tried to go to
google.com and hotbot.com).

Error: The website you are looking for does not appear to
be located on this server.
It is our understanding that your computer may require one
of the new security patches from Microsoft.com. Please
download it from teh following address:

AFter you have updated your windows security at
Microsoft's Windows Update (the link above) the address
you have typed in should take you to where you expected to
go.
Thank you.

I have reinstalled IE6, applied the patches again and
still have no luck. I have also checked MS knowledge base
and pulled up article 827326 -- "sorry your system is not
working........" and followed those instructions and still
no luck. I have also put google.com in the trusted zone
and still get the above error message, changed the
security to default level instead of custom, we do have a
firewall but this problem is only on this one pratical
machine.

Anyone out there have a clue as what could be the reason
my user can not access or use a search engine. (the user
can go to other web sites --- cnn, msn, yahoo, state web
page, any web page that he has in his favorites, or just
typing them in the address field BUT search engines).

Thank you,

Robin

Thank you all for your suggestions. I have cleared up the
problem. I went to Symantic webs site since Symantic
System Control Center said this PC had the Trojan.Qhost
virus. I downloaded the Trojan.Qhost fix and ran it. Of
course since Symantic removed the virus this fix did not
find it. I went to another web site that mentioned the
Host file and sure enough the Host file was the culprit, I
deleted it and copied the host file from another machine
and now this user can use his search engines. Thanks
again.

PS. the other website was
www.yale.edu/its/security/qhosts/

Hope this helps others.

Robin
