IE 7 using 100% CPU as process only when closing

Have an intermittent but regular problem with IE7. Cant find an IE 7 support
forum, so I'll try here.

Close all open tabs, and the program is no longer in the Task Manager
applications window, but there is an iexplorer process running in the
processes window that is using as much of the CPU as it can get, which can
regularly be 98% or higher.

The only way to get the machine back is to cancel the process, which get rid
of it, and IE will then restart, and run OK.

Anyone any suggestions how to find out what's upsetting IE. The account is
not administrative, I've cleaned caches, the temporary files, and similar,
but it seems to make no difference

Machine is a reasonably powerful AMD, with 1Gb of memory running XP Pro SP2
with all patches applied. Firewall is Zone Alarm, Anti Virus AVG.
