IE 6 WILL NOT OPEN

T

Tom

I can only surf the web and choose a favorite. I am
running Windows 98 and have "Microsoft Internet Explorer 6
SP-1 and Internet Tools" installed. When I try to repair
IE I get the message "A previous installation has pending
work requiring a reboot. You need to restart your computer
to complete installation before running Internet Explorer
Setup. Setup will now close." I also tried restoring
previous IE but it tells me to rup the setup.exe program
again. I try to run the setup program but it gives my the
same "previous installation" error. Please help or point
me to where I can find out. Thanks

This is probably being caused by adware, spyware, parasite programs.
From Control Panel> Internet Options> Advanced> uncheck "Enable third party
browser extensions." That may allow IE to work.

You might also be able to browse and download programs from the address bar
of Windows Explorer.

Download and run Run CWShredder from
http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/downloads.html
CWShredder is only about 125 KB so it could be downloaded from another
machine onto a floppy disk if necessary.

Then download, install, *update* and run both of these programs:
Ad-aware from http://www.lavasoft.de/software/adaware/
Spybot from http://security.kolla.de/ (Remove items listed in red-others are
optional.)
Both programs should be updated after installation- before use.

Search for and remove other malware and note the security tips at:
Dealing with Unwanted Spyware and Parasites:
http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/unwanted.htm

You should re-enable browser extensions after the cleanup.
