IE 6 will not let me download files from sites anymore

K

Karla

When I go to a site and try to save a file IE won't let
me. It says that it can't find the site. This all happened
after I did the last windows updates. The download box
opens and looks like it begins to start downloading and
then the message comes up that Internet Explorer cannot
find the website. Could there be a setting that needs to
be changed. Something to do with Active X or something.

Hi Karla :)

Try the following and see if it helps.

Unable to download?

If you are unable to download any of the files here and are redirected to a
porn page, search page or just denied access to the file, try these
alternate links that should always work:

HijackThis direct download:
http://209.133.47.12/~merijn/files/HijackThis.exe

CWShredder direct download:
http://209.133.47.12/~merijn/files/CWShredder.exe

The redirection is probably because of a Coolwebsearch variant
(CWS.Aff.Tooncomics or CWS.Dreplace) that intercepts your download to
prevent downloading my programs

Hi Jan,
Thanks for your help.I tried your alternate links and they
would not work either. I tried to download Netscape 7.1
and it wouldn't do it. None of this happened until I did
the Windows Updates. One of them was to Servicepack 6. The
service pack 6 is the latest version of IE. When I go to a
secure site and try to download, a box comes up that says
file download and in the same box at a lower spot it says
getting download information. It appears to be downloading
but isn't. Then after a about 10 or 15 seconds, it says
Internet Explorer was not able to open this internet site.
the requested site is either unavailable or cannot be
found. Please try again later. It makes no sense that IE
cannot find its own site. Right???? I'm wondering if I
should uninstall the updates. Maybe that would solve the
problem? Any other suggestions? I am upset because I can't
even download a different browser because IE won't let me.
I did look at the page you sent me with the problems and
fixes but none seemed to state my exact problem.

It may be caused by unsupported security protocols. There are protocols for
sending and receiving secured information that are not supported by some web
sites. In Internet Explorer go to the following:

Tools | Advanced uncheck protocols other than SSL (Secured Sockets Layer)
such as PCT and TLS, which may not be supported.

I also suggest that you download and install all the necessary updates and
patches then see if the problem still continues. There are some patches that
have been issue that deal with some of the Internet issues. Downloading and
saving some types of files.

Please report back the results.

What operating system are you using, and what version of IE do you have? IE6
or IE6 SP1?

If you don't have IE6 SP1, you might consider upgarding to the IE6 SP1. If
there is a hotfix for this as described here, it will require that you have
IE6 SP1.
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;[LN];Q816868

MS states here that "Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in
Microsoft Internet Explorer 6."

Have you tried the information I posted for Karla? :)

Try this:

1. Select "Internet Options" under the Tools menu of Internet Explorer.
2. Select the Advanced tab.
3. Under Security, uncheck the box beside "Do not save encrypted pages to disk".

Worked for me!

Hi Karla :)

Sorry to get back to you so late, but, I've been trying to do some research
on this too.
You said that this started when you upgraded to the IE6 SP1. This is not an
unknown situation to happen, among others, sometimes.

I'm going to take this in steps, and you will have to "borrow" another
computer with CD burning capabilities in order to get the files you might
need to do those in Step 2.
Please don't do the uninstall/reinstall until you have a) tried Step 1.; and
b) reviewed the information in Step 2. Uninstalling and reinstalling IE6
SP1 can sometimes cause some pretty hairy problems if not done properly. :)

So....let's start:

Step 1. Repair Internet Explorer

This will perform a repair of your IE and perhaps repair any missing or
damaged files or connections causing the problem. This one you can do from
your own PC. You may have said which version of Windows you have, but, I
can't find it, so, I'm going to provide for XP as well. If you don't need
the XP, delete it so you won't get confused. You should also print out
these instructions to have handy. You will not be able to keep your
newsreader open while performing the tasks. If you need help, or are not
sure at any time, post back with questions or reports. :)

Be sure that your AV and firewall is disabled before starting:

1. Close all Internet windows and programs, then the Click the Start tab
on the bottom task bar.
2. Click Settings
3. Click Control Panel
4. Click on Add/Remove Programs
5. Find and highlight your IE version in the list
6. Click the Add/Remove tab on the dialog box under the window
7. When the Wizard window opens you should see a Repair Internet Explorer
8. Click the radio button or box next to it, then click OK
9. Let it run the repair
10. Reboot you computer

or......

Method 2 in this article works on earlier versions of Windows.
How to Reinstall or Repair Internet Explorer and Outlook Express in Windows
XP

or.................

If you have not already done so, then you might try a repair of IE6 as

or

For XP Repair of IE - Courtesy of Robert Aldwinckle

XP users who have installed IE6sp1 before upgrading to XPsp1
will have setupwbv.dll and will be able to do a repair using

rundll32 setupwbv.dll,IE6Maintenance

Otherwise, they have to use

sfc /scannow

etc., or reinstall IE6 (Ref: KB318378)

or......................

Courtesy of Jim Byrd:

There is no direct Repair function for IE6 in XP. Here are some
alternatives:

1. With XP you need to go to Start|Run and type "sfc /scannow" (without the
quotes and notice the space between the c and the /.) Have your XP CD handy
and be prepared to go get a cup of coffee - it takes a while. This will do
the same thing as Repair IE6 for XP but a lot more, that is find any corrupt
system files and replace them. It does not, however, re-register the
various software components (except possibly the ones it replaces?) AFAIK.

Be aware that under certain circumstances (Win2k before SP4 - see mskb
814510, http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;Q814510) sfc
can erroneously overwrite (restore over) previously installed files from
certain "hotfixes" which will then need to be re-installed. To check for
this, after running sfc, open a Cmd window and enter "qfecheck /v /l:c:\"
(without the quotes). If you don't have qfecheck installed, it can be
obtained for XP here:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/release.asp?ReleaseID=35468 and for
Win2k, obtain qfecheck here:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/release.asp?ReleaseID=35470

2. Another alternative that works on Win2k and may or may not work on XP
(but probably does - I've heard both stories), for just IE6 repair if you
don't have IE6 listed in Add-Remove Programs, then in Start|Run then enter

"rundll32 setupwbv.dll,IE6Maintenance"

without the quotes, exactly as shown, and select the appropriate entry.

3. If you find that you need to do a re-install of IE6 then you can
consider the following, I can't verify this for XP (I'm Win2k - it works
there, and I've had good reports from XP users), but you might want to give
it a try at your own risk. Again, enter this at Start|Run without the
quotes and be careful about the spacing:

"rundll32.exe setupapi,InstallHinfSection DefaultInstall 132
C:\windows\inf\ie.inf"

4. Lastly, here is a link to a MSKB article about re-installing IE6/OE6:

XP (Q318378)

Here is a more recent suggestion I have been giving to XP users
who want to try some repair procedures.

<TITLE>831429 - Windows XP stops responding when you download updates from
Windows Update</TITLE>

It is actually a more comprehensive set of re-registrations than an
IE Repair with the default FixIE.inf would do for either NT5.

Although they are listed specifically for W2K they should apply
equally to XP.

====================================
Step 2. IE Install/Uninstall Procedures

If you can not download these programs from the Internet, if your PC
has CD read capabilities, go to another computer with CD-ROM burning
capabilities. Create a folder on the hard drive of the other computer called
HOLD, download the programs to that folder, then burn that folder to a CD.
Copy the HOLD folder to your HD and then install the programs from there
and run them.

Wow, Jan! You really did research this problem for me. You have no idea how much I appreciate this. I can't try any of these fixes at the moment because in my frustration yesterday, I contacted Microsoft by email and one of the techs is working on my problem. And for free I think. Actually I will send you a copy of what he wrote to me. I found a temporary fix on my own but it doesn't completely solve the problem, it just sort of puts a bandaid on it. LOL! I go into Internet Options advanced and delete temporary internet files and cookies each time I want to download a file and it lets me. The problem is, I have to do this every single time I try to download anything which is a pain. At least I was able to download Netscape yesterday so that if IE craps out on me now, I can still browse. Here is what the tech wrote me. Can you email me? It might be easier to converse about this. Thanks again. I hope to hear from you.

Dear Karla,

Thank you for contacting Microsoft Windows Online Support Service. My name is Leon and I will be working with you on this service request.

I understand you have encountered a problem with Internet Explorer after installing certain Windows Update. Your operating system is Windows 98. If I have misunderstood your concerns, please don't hesitate to let me know.

Recently we have received reports against Critical Update. Some customers are experiencing issues when/after installing this update, while others report to us that everything is working after the update. Our develop team is striving to find out the root cause. However, as you know, different computers have different hardware & software installed on them. Problems may occur under certain circumstance though we have tested most of the possibilities. Therefore, at this point, I suggest you uninstall the updates you installed one by one to narrow down the root cause of the problem.

To uninstall the updates, you can find them by entering My Computerè Control Panelè Add/Remove Programs. Highlight the update you want to uninstall then click Remove. Restart the computer and test the issue again. The process of isolating the problematic update might be time-consuming. I appreciate your time and effort on working with me. If you have any questions or concerns related to this issue, please feel free to let me know.

I look forward to hearing from you. Have a nice day!

Best regards,

Leon Li

I am glad to hear that you are getting some assistance from Microsoft on
this issue. I wish to caution you on posting your good e-mail address on the
newsgroups, as it an result in a great deal of SPAM. If you write it out, we
will be able to figure it out :))

It's good that you now have a backup browser to use until you can get the
issue with IE resolved.

I look forward to hearing what their response will be to resolving the
problem.
