IE 6 Repair Confusion>>

I am trying to run the IE6 repair option. I am using Windows Second Edition. I get a error message telling me: "Internet Explorer 6 could not be repaired. Please run Set-up again to reinstall all components."

and then:

"Internet Explorer 6 cannot be repaired due to following errors.
Version 4.0.0.2926 of file SCRRUN.DLL exists, but the version needs to be
greater than 5.1.0.5010."

A search of the Knowledge base seems to suggest the Repair cannot be used in Windows 98 SE.

If not, why do I still have access to the repair option? Can someone straighten this confusion out and suggest a way to fix this problem if it is indeed fixable?

And this is unrelated to your WinUp loop problem?

In Win98, you can overinstall IE6:

First, close *everything* via CTRL+ALT+DEL except Windows Explorer (includes
your AV program, Scheduled Tasks, Screensaver, and going offline).
Start>Run>IE6Setup.exe. Select Minimal - Custom; Select all the parts you
use, including OE (but none you didn't originally download) and overinstall.
Should take about 2 minutes. Reboot the computer.

Now, with AV and all other running processes still closed, check in at
Windows Update for additional updates and patches you will need.

It is related, of course.
Start>Run>IE6Setup.exe.<<

My system is telling it can't find the file (or one of its components).

That said. I know I'm running IE6, and I can unistall it from the Control Panel. My system just can't seem to find the Setup file.

Any ideas?

Though my original question still stands. Should I be able to use the Repair function in Windows 98 Second Edition?

Thanks

Update:

I found the IE6set-up file by using the Find features, ran it as per your instructions, and installed all updates as per your instructions. I still cannot successfully run the "Repair Internet Explorer" program.

I get the same exact error message as before.

"Internet Explorer 6 could not be repaired. Please run Set-up again to reinstall all components."

and then:

"Internet Explorer 6 cannot be repaired due to following errors. Version 4.0.0.2926 of file SCRRUN.DLL exists, but the version needs to be greater than 5.1.0.5010."

Please advise.

And have you visited Windows Update since overinstalling IE6...?

SCRRUN.DLL is part of Windows Scripting. (Re)installing 5.6 Scripting
Engine should fix it:
http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/downloads/list/webdev.asp

Kewl, now why do you want to run IE6 Repair option, especially now?
Overinstalling, as you have done, does everything Repair does and more.
CrystalBall© tells me you're suffering from hijackware and a Repair,
Reinstall or Overinstall if IE will not help on bit:

CoolWebSearch Chronicles

Run these tools in the following order with nothing else running in
background:

1. CWShredder (fix all found)

2. Ad-Aware (fix all found)

3. Spybot (RTFM but generally fix everything in red)

Important: You *must* seek updates for Ad-Aware, Spybot, etc., before each
and every use, even "right out of the box". But even they can't catch
everything, 24/7. When all else fails, HijackThis
(http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/files/HijackThis.exe) is the preferred
tool to use. It will help you to both identify and remove any
hijackware/spyware. **Post your files to http://forums.spywareinfo.com/ or
http://forum.aumha.org/viewforum.php?f=30 for expert analysis, not here.**

[Alternate download pages for many of the above tools may be found at
http://aumha.org/a/parasite.htm.]

Also:

1. Download and run Stinger (http://vil.nai.com/vil/stinger/); then...

2. Update your virus definitions, enable Show Hidden Files
(http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2002092715262339)
and then run a full system scan in Safe Mode
(http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2001052409420406)
with nothing else running in background. Note the files identified and
removed then find the corresponding page for the file at your AV maker's
online support pages (e.g.,
http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/adware.winfavorites.html)
and follow all Removal steps.

WinXP Only (WinME similar): If this scan finds anything, create a new
Restore Point then Disk Cleanup > More options > Delete all but the most
recent Restore Point.

3. Check in at Windows Update.

So How Did I Get Infected Anyway?
