Cant repair IE 6

(Having a bit of trouble, sorry if this email comes through twice)

Hi everyone..
Im hopeing someone can help me figure this out..
I have been having trouble with the TAB button on my keyboard. I have
already figured out it isnt the keyboard, since I purchased a new one and
still the same issue.
The TAB function works fine except for when I want to use the tab button to
move the mouse cursor down to a "password" box to type in a password. The
tab button will then make the cursor to skip the password box and highlight
the "submit" or "enter" button. This only happens when I want to type in a
password box.

No one can seem to figure out why this is going on...but someone suggested I
try to repair my IE browser.

Ok, while I tried to do that, I got the following message:

"Internet Explorer 6 could not be repaired.
Please run setup again to reinstall all components."

Now when I click details to see the rest of the message, I received the
following:

" Internet Explorer 6 could not be repaird due to the following errors:
Version 5.50.4134.100 of MSHTMLED.DLL exists, but the version needs to be
greater than 6.0.2800.1100"

Does anyone know what that means and how do I fix it?
I did do some research and tried a fix I saw that said that file may be
corrupted and called for me to copy and paste the file anew, but I still
have a problem.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance..
Tarcia

Always disclose your OS when you need help.
All we can tell from this is that you probably don't have XP...

I did do some research and tried a fix I saw that said that file may be
corrupted and called for me to copy and paste the file anew, but I still
have a problem.

Depending on where you are going to do that you may be engaging
in risky activity. That could be a excellent way to introduce a Trojan
to your computer... ; }

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

How many other instances of the problem module can you find
already on your harddrive(s)? It looks as if that module somehow
got regressed from an IE6sp1 version to an IE5.0 version (apprently
an earlier build than an IE55sp2 version would have been,
which I suppose is another clue which might help us figure out which
OS you are using <eg>)

In any case, the simplest solution might be just to visit the Windows Update
site and get the latest cumulative update for Internet Explorer 6.0
There is undoubtedly a more up-to-date (and more secure) version
of your problem module available that way. ; )

In your first thread, you state that you're running WinME.

Have you ever had occasion to reinstall Window? If so, did you uninstall
IE6 SP1 *before* reinstalling Windows?

Sorry about that...I had typed an original message that I remembered to
include the OS in..dont know
what happened and had to type another one...
In any case..the OS is Windows ME...
I read somewhere on Microsofts website someplace about that particular file,
thats the only reason
I dared attempt to replace it..and I did scan it first, if thats any help...

And since you mention the version regression..I dont know why it happened,
but I do notice that when I
look at the version of my IE, it says 6.0, but on my program list, it says
Internet Explorer 5.
Does that have anything to do with it? Am I able to download the 6.0 version
anywhere to fix this?
I dont have a Windows ME disc...the only thing I have is the startup disc I
created when I first got the pc...

Thanks again..

Hi, thanks for responding..
No, I havent reinstalled Windows at any time....although I have had to
system restore before..but that shouldnt do all this should it?
When I look in my Add/Remove programs, I do see "Microsoft Internet Explorer
6 SP1 and Internet Tools"
Is that what you mean?

thanks again,
Tarcia

No, that's not what I meant but what you've posted brings up another
question.

In your reply to my colleague Robert, you said:

but I do notice that when I
look at the version of my IE, it says 6.0, but on my program list, it says
Internet Explorer 5.

Are you saying that in Start | Programs, you see IE5 listed, not IE6? I
have more but I need you to answer this question first.

Also tell me if you bought this machine brand-new and were and remain its
only owner.

Honeysweet

Hi PA Bear,
Yes, thats what Im saying..in my Start \Programs, I see IE5 and not IE6.
But it wasnt like that when I purchased the machine.
However when I open the browser and look in the Help \ About Internet
Explorer section, it says its
version 6.0.

Also, I bought this machine refurbished years ago, so there may have been at
least
one other owner...I know refurbished doesnt always mean previously owned but
in this case,
it probably was.

Thanks again!

Forwarded to WinME General via crosspost.

Sounds like WinME was reinstalled without first uninstalling IE6 SP1 when
the machine was "refurbished (i.e., /before/ you purchased it). The folks
in WinME General newsgroup can help you fix this and get IE6 SP1 installed
properly.

Tarcia,

If Win Me was reinstalled on a system where IE6 was installed without
first uninstalling IE6 the result is a mish mash of versions with parts of
IE5.5 and IE6 installed. The following might help you to properly install
IE6 (or IE6 SP1) and resolve the problem.

Using Windows Explorer first set it so you can view hidden system files
and folders (Tools | Folder Options | View and check "Show hidden files
and folders" and UNcheck "Hide protected operating system files" and
Apply).

Create a new folder "C:\Program Files\Internet Backup"

Locate the folder "C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\Uninstall
Information". Move the contents of this folder to the folder "C:\Program
Files\Internet Backup" created above.

Now try installing IE6 (or better IE6 SP1), re-selecting all components
that you want using
the Advanced option, even those already bolded, and see if this works. If
this works you can now safely delete the folder "C:\Program Files\Internet
Backup" and its contents. If not, copy the files back to the "C:\Program
Files\Internet Explorer\Uninstall Information" folder and delete the
"C:\Program Files\Internet Backup" folder.

Tarcia,

Not a problem. I've also been offline for the most part of the last
three/four weeks or so for much the same reason.
