IE 6 not finding websites

M

Mark Mumy

All,

I just noticed some very odd behavior with IE 6. Not
sure when it started, though. I used to be able to put
in a website address like this: my.yahoo.com. IE would
resolve it to HTTP and open the web page. Now, it won't
do that automatically. In fact, IE just spins
indefinitely with no errors. I let it sit overnight
once. If I change the address to http://my.yahoo.com it
works just fine.

Like most, I like to reduce the amount of typing that I
do and find this frustrating.

Is this new? Normal now? Thoughts?

Thanks!

Thanks for the help, but yes, all of those values are set
properly. Any other thoughts?

What is also interesting is that even though the inline
autocomplete is turned on, even that doesn't work.

First eliminate any scumware.
See
Dealing with Unwanted Spyware, Parasites, Toolbars and Search Engines
http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/unwanted.htm

Note that AdAware and SpyBot S & D will each catch some things the other
won't. Also, each need to be updated before every use, even when just
downloaded.

If trying everything at that site does not fix the problem please post back
in the same thread.

Again, thanks for the quick response.

I had already run through the information on that page
based on other posts. To be sure, I ran through it
again. Still the same behavior.

I have had Adawarea and SpyBot installed and running for
quite some time and have always been diligent about
running them.

Would uninstalling and reinstalling IE 6 clear this up?
Or should I look elsewhere?

Ad-Aware and SpyBot S & D need to be updated often, Preferrably before each
time they are run.

Agreed. Both were updated before being run. Neither
found any issues other than items that I have put in
place (host file entries, automatic startup applications).

I found this info/patch on HP web site and it seems to be
working.

Autocomplete does not work in Windows XP

After installing Service Pack 1, Internet Explorer no
longer displays complete text for the first few letters
you type when typing on Web pages. HP has made a patch
available to address this issue. Go to the Patch Download
Page and follow the instructions to download and install
the patch.
