IE 6 Keeps Crashing

G

Guest

Please help- When I navigate thru web pages, eventuallly IE 6 will post an
error message-IE has encountered an error and needs to close this window.
This happens whether I'm navigating my third page or my 20th, IE will
eventually crash.

I do look at the technical info in the error but cannot make heads nor tails
from it. Someone please tell me how I can start troubleshooting and resolving
this error.

Thanks

Hi dd :)

Try the following and see if it helps:

Internet Explorer closes unexpectedly:
http://inetexplorer.mvps.org/answers_5.htm#shuts_down

or.......

Open an ms-dos prompt window (Start>Run>) and type the following (one entry
at a time), and press enter after each line. A message will appear stating
that these have been registered successfully.

regsvr32 Shdocvw.dll
regsvr32 Shell32.dll (this command only for Win2000 and XP)
regsvr32 Oleaut32.dll
regsvr32 Actxprxy.dll
regsvr32 Mshtml.dll
regsvr32 Urlmon.dll

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;27655

If these steps do not resolve your problem, or you need help with the above,
please post back to this thread with the details and any error messages.

Hope this helps

Jan :)

First eliminate any spyware.
What You Should Know About Spyware
http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/spyware/devioussoftware.mspx

CAUTION!!!!! Before you try to remove spyware using any of these programs ,
download a copy of LSPFIX from any of the following sites:
http://www.cexx.org/lspfix.htm
http://www.spychecker.com/program/winsockxpfix.html
(if your OS is Win2k or XP) The process of removing certain malware may kill
your internet connection. If this should occur, this program, LSPFIX, will
enable you to regain your connection.

See
Dealing with Unwanted Malware, Parasites, Toolbars and Search Engines
http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/unwanted.htm

Note that AdAware and SpyBot S & D will each catch some things the other
won't. Also, each needs to be updated with the program's update function
before every use, even when just downloaded. There's also a lot more to do
than just those two programs. CWShredder is also available here:

Yes....I agree with Frank, based upon the error, you are probably a victim
of some form of scumware on your system. Follow the information Frank has
kindly provided to clean your system fully, and the problem should be
resolved. If not, post back with any further error messages or other
details of the problem and we'll go from there. :)

Dear Jan:

I performed the actions in MS Dos and everything registered successfully.
Unfortunately, IE 6.0 still crashes. I have also looked at the Microsoft info
on the subject, but it is still too technical for me. any suggestions?

Thanks,

DD

Dear Frank:

I downloaded several spyware programs you suggested, ran them and found
spyware. After deleting the offenders, I am sad to say that I still am having
problems with IE 6.0 crashing. I used SpyChecker and CWS Shredder. What other
things should I do to stop this problem? By the way, I have looked at
Microsoft's knowledge base, but I am having trouble deciphering the whole
thing. I just need a step by step process, so I can use the process of
elimination to get at the root of this problem.
Please reply.

Thanks,
DD

Download "Hijack This!" [freeware]

Unzip, double-click "HijackThis.exe" and Press "Scan".

When the scan is finished, the "Scan" button will change into a "Save Log"
button.
Click: "Save Log" (generates: "hijackthis.log")

Next, go to the below location:
http://www.spywareinfo.com/forums/

Sign in, go to the "Spyware and Hijackware Removal" section.
Press "New Topic" and post a description of your symptoms. If they need to
see your log they will ask for it.
