IE 6 fails to run. Reports error in shell32.dll

my internet explorer quit working. when I try and run it
if fails with an error report showing shell32.dll version
4.72.3812.600.
I can still access the internet via AOL but not IE. I have
tried rebooting, reinstalling IE6 from the upgrade file
but nothing works.
Norton does not report any problems either. LiveUpdate
works as does ping so the network connection looks fine.
Any Suggestions???
