ie 6 dies on internet connection

Craig Bruntz

Sometime in the last two weeks (everything has worked for two years),
IE 6 has stopped accessing the internet. I have look high and low for
the problem and can't find anything wrong. It gets a kernel32 error.

Have looked for spyware, virus, bad folders(temp, cookies, history), bad
password file.

The PC is a 98 SP 1 with BLackICE firewall and norton anti virus.
Everything else that accesses the internet runs: netscape, explorer by
typing in a URL, windows media, real player, norton antivirus, adaware,
spybot.

Have reinstalled IE6
Installed IE5.5 than upgrade to IE6

IE 6 with blank in the startup loads just fine, it dies when you try to
access an URL.

Any help would be apreciated.

I am having the same problem. If, when you have a browser
open and if you go to the VIEW Menu, and show the status
bar, does it show that it is trying to connect to badurl
grandstreetinteractive.com ? Please leet me know. I have
no idea how to fix it but it would be good to know that i
am not the only one with this problem.

thanks,
Jen

Also download, install, update and run the free program here in addition to
your Adaware. Sometimes one will detect something the other did not. It's a
good rule of thumb to always run both SpyBot and Adaware jointly.

It is possible you may have parasites, spyware, adware,
malware, or hijackware on your system causing the problem.
Download and install, you *must* update the programs prior
to running to be sure they have the latest definitions, then
run the programs below. They are free and very effective. Be
sure to run both SpyBot and Adaware, as what one does
not detect the other may. It is important that you follow all
directions carefully:

You're going to be ok, it's not hopeless. ;-) It just means we will have to
take an alternate route. So ....let's just take the steps one at a time.

1. Can you get access to another computer that has CD burn capabilities, a
friend, at work, the public library?

2. If so, print a copy of the list of websites I have listed here and then
go to all of the sites on the other computer and download the all the
programs to the My Documents folder on the other computer hard drive, so you
will know where to find them once they are all downloaded.

3. Then use the CD burn program to burn all the downloaded install files to
the CD. DO NOT install them to other hard drive first, you must copy the
*original* zipped install files from the hard drive to the CD, or you will
not be able to install them to your computer.

4. Then create a folder on the hard drive of your computer called HOLD, then
copy the zipped files from the CD to this folder.

5. Click on the zipped files to install each one. Let them install to their
default folder. Check the desktop to be sure that each has created a
shortcut to your desktop. If not, then go to the default folder of any that
have not and create a shortcut and copy the shortcut to the desktop.

6. Run them each in the order that I have listed. I have listed them in the
order that will work best for the problem solving process.

If you can not reach any of these sites from your computer, then downloading
and copying them from another that can burn a CD is the way you will need to
get the programs to clean your PC. :)

If you have any questions please post back here.

Hope this helps.

Hi Jan,

Thanks for your help. I have access to a floppy drive now
but only have 2 floppy disks. I downloaded CWShredder. I
think the other programs are too big (more than the 1.44
mb that can be transfered to the floppy). Is the shredder
program enough? Are there other small programs that I
need? Or is there a way to download it all and get it to
fit on the floppy?

thanks,
Jen

You can try the shredder, it might help. Do you have a CD ROM drive on your
computer?

If the CWShredder does not work, you will need to get the others burned onto
a CD from a computer that can create CD's so that you can put the CD into
your CD ROM drive and copy them to your hard drive. I don't know of smaller
programs that might be as effective, but, perhaps one of the professionals
here do. Just be very careful of what programs you use, as there are some
that can do more harm than good.

Have done all these options. The problem is when Internet Explorer tries
to connect to the internet. Have a cable modem, so it is always
connected. I can open any HTM page on my hard drive with IE6, I can get
to the internet with ANY other program, including Explorer. I know it is
a dll or file that ONLY IE6 uses. The problem is trying to find it.

I am sorry that I can not help you further with this issue. Perhaps someone
else here might have more information to help resolve your problem.

Good luck :)

Some crashes in kernel32.dll are due to bad video drivers.
Try diagnosing your symptom by turning off Show Pictures
(Options, Advanced tab, Multimedia section)
and setting all promptable Security options to Prompt.
Reply No to all prompts. How far do you get then?
