IE 6 Connection hang

N

Ned

None of my programs which access the internet will do so.
They just hang and have to be closed through Taskmaster.
This is a new problem which arose while installing a third
party tool bar to IE, which I have subsequently remove.
The problem seems to be in the connection area which IE
and OE share. When I try to access the Connection tab
through the IE Tools menu and select Intenet Options, then
the Connections tab, IE crashes.

I would appreciate any comments from anyone who recognizes
this problem.

Thanks

PS I am able to post this message through a second OS
installed on another drive on my computer, so the network
connection and hardware would seem to be OK.

What tool bar? Check the tool bar's info, faqs, website, etc to see if they
have any clues. Also you should google with an appropriate search string,
looking for references to other people with the same tool bar problem.
That's what I usually try first in such situations. Sometimes also there's a
forum dealing with a particular software item such as your 3rd party tool
bar, and if so, odds are good they're aware of such a problem. If possible,
also query the tool bar's webmaster and/or tech support dept by email. I'd
try those direct approaches first. You might get lucky.

Otherwise...

It sounds like you should try repairing or reinstalling Internet Explorer.
The method depends on your IE version, and the version of Windows you're
running. I'm not familiar with all of them. Windows 98/98se had a IE Repair
Tool which could be accessed through Add/Remove Programs: select IE, click
the uninstall button, and the repair option is offered. It was also
available in msinfo32 menu if I recall correctly. [I have no idea about
Windows Me/2000.] I now have XP Home, and in such a situation was advised to
open a command window (Start,Run,cmd) and enter:

SFC /SCANNOW

(note the space after SFC )
That's supposed to check all the protected files on your computer and repair
them if necessary.

And/or you might try restoring a prior registry, or use the system restore
operation in Windows XP (if that's what you're running).

Otherwise, I'd probably be backing up all my data with a mind towards
reformatting the hard drive and reinstalling windows clean. But that's up to
you. Sometimes that's the easiest way. But sometimes you can get lucky and
find an easier fix.

Good luck....!
