IE 6 Bizarre Cache Size Behavior

Rick

I've always had my IE 6 maximum cache size set at 100 mg in Internet
Options.

I'm used to seeing the cache up to the 10-50mg range when I get around
to clearing it.

Well, starting a few weeks ago, I noticed the cache was *clearing
itself* regularly for some reason, at about 1 mg or even less.

After some dead end attempts to remedy this, I reset the maximum cache
size from 100 mg to 500 mg at 11 pm tonight. And I notice I'm now up
to 10 mg, and still have Temporary Internet files "last accessed" back
to 11 pm. So it looks like this *may* have solved the problem.

HOWEVER...it's still a bit bizarre and unsettling. Does anyone have
any ideas what may have caused the problem in the first place, and why
the apparent solution worked? Could there be some kind of IE or OS
(Win 98SE) mis-calibration occuring? If so, did I correct it somehow
or does this signal some larger problem that should be addressed?

BTW, I verified that the "Clear Cache Upon Exiting" option had
remained unchecked. Also, there was no problem with the history
function -- it listed the full 20 days of browsing history at all
times.

Thanks in advance for any thoughts.

IE doesn't manage a cache well, it's buggy in IE 5.5 and was carried over to
IE 6. It almost doesn't matter what size you set it to.
