Identity theft of what?

Try this.
Am using DirectTV satellite TV right now. Dishnetwork is less expensive.
(I live in a rural area).

After getting the details (dish network), they asked for my first/last name,
street address, and zip code, phone number, and credit card number. No
problem.

Then, asked for my SSN. Problem. Not needed for running the credit card
for connection, antenna, and so forth. Told the them to forget it in light
of identity theft problems. And, to remove all the personal information
I've provided. After an acknowlegment, hung up.

Was subsequently bombarded by 7 sequential phone calls from 8003151722.
Last one, I picked up on. You guessed it disk network guy. After verifying
who I was, my package, and so forth etc. Again, they wanted by SSN. I
volunteered that they needed this in event of dish or receiver theft by
myself, which he would neither confirm or deny. He said they could not ship
the receiver and dish antenna unless I gave them my SSN (huh?) to verify my
credit worthiness. Told the person that they seem to be in cahoots with
DirectTV (check the dishnetwork website). Just check with DirectTV if I pay
my bill on time. He evaded a response. Then, I told the person to cancel
and that I felt my SSN was not needed and may be provided to others or
available to non-persons (corp.) via their database voluntarily or
otherwise. Again, SSN not needed. An immediate dial tone occurred at that
time. Draw your own conclusions.

Stick to cable if you live in the big city. They provide fast internet
service that isn't really terribly expensive either. They don't want your
SSN and first born child to boot.

Hope your SSN, bank account numbers etc. are not on XP somewhere. The
verification of MS software sends data home via internet. I've never seen
that data, nor have I been asked if its okay to do so.

Paranoid? That's in the eye of the person or non-person who's taking
advantage. At least that's what they want everyone else to think. Ponder
that.

I have had Dish Network for over five years and they have never ask for my
SSN.

Sincerely,
Injam

Did you try what I noted? You might note an Mideast accent in the
respondent phone?
"Injam"?
