IDE to USB LG DVD drive issue

let me start by saying that this IDE dvd drive worked internally with my old
desktop. i got a new laptop a few days ago and i wish to use the ide device
with the laptop, so i got a ide to usb adapter. i tested it with both my
computers. i have a 4403us and a zd8000. the device ios having issues
working externally on both computers.

on both computers the device does not seem to be installing properly. when i
go check to see what drivers are installed, it shows that the device is
working fine and that there are no drivers installed. when i try to
update/install the drivers it can not find a better driver for the device.

on the zd8000, the pc will not go passed the bios screen unless the dvd
drive is turned on in the adapter.

on the 4403us, the pc will not shut down if the dvd drive turned on in the
adapter. the pc will work fine if the dvd drive is attacted to the 4403us
internaly.

i want to get the dvd drive working properly externally with the laptop. i
know that the pc has the drivers because it works internally with the
4403us. maybe the adapter is giving the pc issues with finding the drivers
or maybe it is something else. i got the IDE to usb adapter from
www.cyberguys.com i have never had a IDE drive issue like this before. that
is mostly because i use multibay laptop drives with laptops and desktops.
can someone please help me fix this issue?

I would guess there isn't enough power. Buy an external drive enclosure
that plugs into the wall instead. Put your drive in there. I'm very
fond of the Thermaltake 5.25" case I have - it holds a 300GB Seagate
hard drive and is almost completely silent and stays cool. I bought the
Thermaltake external enclosure at www.newegg.com.

What if the power is not the issue?
the drive gets power but the activity light keeps blinking if the drive is
connected to the pc or not. does that mean anything?
does anyone have anyother opinions?

Do you have it jumpered correctly? My drive in the external enclosure
needs to be Master. Other than my earlier suggestion to buy an external
drive enclosure instead of what you've got, I'm out of ideas. Hopefully
someone else will come along to help you.
