IDE hard drive via usb

Hi there I have probs with connecting my old 8gb seagate ide hard drive, i
hav it in an usb 2 enclosure, but when connected, devices found comes up on
icons tray, and loads the drivers, but it wont display the device anywhere, I
dont have this prob with a newer maxtor 80GB one though any help is grately
welcome!

Is it perhaps just not assigning a drive letter?

I would suspect a problem with the drive itself. Does it work
properly when connected direct to an IDE controller?
